In today’s study our titles are; Verses 1-14 The parable of the marriage feast. Verses 15-22 God and Caesar. Verses 23-33 The question about the resurrection. Verses 34-40 The great commandment. Verses 41-46 The question about David’s son. Matthew 22 and verse 1 reads.
Mat.22:1] And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
[2] The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
The king is God the Father and the son is the Son of God in this parable.
Mat.22:3] And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
We are his servants and those that are bidden are called. Many are called but few are chosen. Mat.20:16. It is God’s will that all come to repentance. 2Pet.3:9.
Mat.22:4] Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
Wisdom speaks of this in Proverbs 9 and verse 1 reads.
Prov.9:1] Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
[2] She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
[3] She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
[4] Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
[5] Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
We find in the Old Testament this very marriage, it is the body of Christ and his blood on the cross. Back to Matthew 22 and verse 5 reads.
Mat.22:5] But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
[6] And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
[7] But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
These remnants are the Kenites, and we are talking about the end times. The servants are those that overcame in the first earth age. They are God’s Elect today and can be called his wife already. Let’s go to Revelation 19 and verse 7 reads.
Rev.19:7] Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
[8] And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
[9] And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
What this is saying is God’s Elect has brought more with him to the marriage to the Lamb. Bringing them out of a spiritual death. This is our job today, to bring as many as we can find back to the Father and his Word. My only hope is to hear, job well done my good and faithful servant. Back to Matthew 22 and verse 8 reads.
Mat.22:8] Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
Those Kenites were not worthy, go now and find more.
Mat.22:9] Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
[10] So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Keywords here are good and bad.
Mat.22:11] And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
[12] And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
[13] Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
[14] For many are called, but few are chosen.
Matthew 20 and verse 16 reads.
Mat.20:16] So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
In Matthew 25:1-12, we have the parable of the ten virgins. Five of the ten virgins were not wise and heard from Jesus; I knew you not. These had not the truth, they were deceived and worshipped the antichrist thinking he was the Christ. Thus, we have the gnashing of teeth. Back to Matthew 22 and verse 15 reads.
Mat.22:15] Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
[16] And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
These Pharisees sent their disciples with governmental officials to see if they could trip up the Living Word, let’s see how it goes for them.
Mat.22:17] Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
Tribute is taxes. It is not written anywhere in the Word of God not to pay taxes. But on the contrary, pay your taxes. In Matthew 17:25-26 Jesus sent Peter to go find a coin in a fish’s mouth to pay his taxes.
Mat.22:18] But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
He knew they were wicked, and called them hypocrites, play actors.
Mat.22:19] Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
[20] And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
[21] They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
Because the tribute to God was ten percent. It is written; thou shall give a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give to the LORD thy God, according as the LORD thy God hath blessed thee. Deu.16:10.
Mat.22:22] When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
[23] The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
Here we have it said, the Sadducees do not believe in life after death. Then why do they sit in the judgement seat of Moses? Remember we just learned of the Marriage supper of the Lamb.
Mat.22:24] Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
This is written in Deuteronomy 25 and verse 5 reads.
Deu.25:5] If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
[6] And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
There are some specifics that are mentioned here that the Sadducees left out. One, the brothers live together. The other is kinsman redeemer, that the name of the first be not forgotten in Israel. Now, the Sadducees will bring up a nonfactual circumstance. Back to Matthew 22 and verse 25 reads.
Mat.22:25] Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
[26] Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
[27] And last of all the woman died also.
[28] Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
In the resurrection in which they do not believe. Let’s go to 1Timothy 1 and verse 4 reads.
1Tim.1:4] Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
And in 1Timothy 4 and verse 7 reads.
1Tim.4:7] But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
Do not let trickery in these end times take you away from the Word of God. Back to Matthew 22 and verse 29 reads.
Mat.22:29] Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
[30] For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
[31] But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
[32] I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
Jesus quoted Exodus 3:6,15. Let’s go to Ecclesiastes 12 and verse 6 reads.
Ecc.12:6] Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
In other words, when we die.
Ecc.12:7] Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
No one is left in a hole in the ground, all go to the Father instantly in the spirit. Back to Matthew 22 and verse 33 reads.
Mat.22:33] And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
[34] But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
The Pharisees and the Sadducees team up now.
Mat.22:35] Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
[36] Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
This guy is what we call a scripture lawyer. Notice he does this to try and trick the Word of God.
Mat.22:37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
[38] This is the first and great commandment.
Jesus is quoting Deuteronomy 6 and verse 4 reads.
Deu.6:4] Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
[5] And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
[6] And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
[7] And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Teach this to your children when you are in the way walking with them, sitting around the house, before bedtime, and when you wake up. This is a commandment of God. Now, Jesus just gave the first five commandments of God (Exo.20:3-12). They are spiritual, a personal relationship with God. He continues, Matthew 22 and verse 39 reads.
Mat.22:39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
[40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
These would be the last five commandments of God (Exo.20:13-17). These are civil, how to treat a neighbor and get along. All commandments were given to us here by Jesus in an easy lesson. Let’s go to Romans 13 and verse 8 reads.
Rom.13:8] Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
[9] For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
[10] Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
And in Galatians 5 and verse 14 reads.
Gal.5:14] For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
But we learn by the words of Jesus, God first and civil second. Back to Matthew 22 and verse 41 reads.
Mat.22:41] While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
They just tried to tempt the Living Word, now the Living Word has a question for them.
Mat.22:42] Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
Christ in Greek is Messiah in Hebrew. They should know the answer here.
Mat.22:43] He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
[44] The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
[45] If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
[46] And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
The Pharisees didn’t have an answer to this question. We need to know the answer to this question. We find it in Psalms 110 and verse 1 reads.
Psa.110:1] The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
David is speaking, this is a Psalm of David. Here is where Jesus was quoting from. Jesus is sitting on the right hand of the LORD after his crucifixion, until the second advent.
Psa.110:2] The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
He then gives us the second advent, when Jesus returns with that rod of Iron. No longer a babe in the flesh for Salvation.
Psa.110:3] Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
The Elect are his servants for the great Day of the LORD.
Psa.110:4] The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
Melchizedek; Melchi is King and Zedek is Holy Priest. KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. This is how Jesus could say Abraham wanted to see his day. Gen.14:18.
Psa.110:5] The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
[6] He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
[7] He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.
Lift up the head, the first prophecy coming to pass. Let’s read it in Genesis 3 and verse 15 reads.
Gen.3:15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
The serpent’s seed bruised his heel when they nailed them to the cross. But at the second advent, the Lord’s Day, he will bruise his head, lift it up. That is the answer to Jesus’s question, there are two advent and they will cause God’s Word to come to pass exactly as it is written. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
