There are 37 verses in the bible with his name Savior, 24 in the New Testament and 13 in the Old Testament. That’s right 13 in the O.T. We find Saviour,H3467 Yasha in Hebrew means; to save, to deliver. Causatively to free or succor. In the N.T. we find it 24 times. G4990 Soter in the Greek, pronounced So-tare in English and means; A deliverer that is God or Christ. 1. A deliverer, savior, preserver. Let’s begin in the O.T. in 2 Samuel chapter 22 and verse 1 reads.
2Sam.22:1] And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
[2] And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
This word deliverer is also H3467 in the Strongs’. Meaning savior, do not overlook the LORD is his rock. There are two rocks, but Satan is not our rock, he is the rock of the Kenites.
2Sam.22:3] The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
Horn is strength. Notice our shield of faith also. Let’s quickly go to Eph.6 and pick it up with verse 11.
Eph.6:11] Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
[12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
[13] Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
[14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
[15] And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
[16] Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
[17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Our salvation depends on the armor of God. Back to 2 Sam.22 and verse 4 reads.
2Sam.22:4] I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
David is showing us that when we call on the LORD he will hear. We find in Revelation 5:6, that Jesus is the only one found Worthy. I want to go to Isaiah now, he records Savior 9 times in his book of prophesy. Let’s pick it up with Isa.43 and verse 1 reads.
Isa.43:1] But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
[2] When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
King David also wrote in Psalms 23 and it reads.
Psa.23:1] The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
[2] He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
[3] He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
[4] Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
[5] Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
[6] Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Back to Isa. 43 and verse 3 reads.
Isa.43:3] For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.
The LORD puts great emphasis on his Holy names, three, the Trinity, the Triune Godhead.
Isa.43:4] Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.
[5] Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;
[6] I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;
[7] Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
The LORD shows us love here, for those who call themselves by his name, Christian. Rev.4:11 the Lord created all things for his pleasure.
Isa.43:8] Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.
Eyes to see and ears to hear, his Elect. We will see here he is talking about the end times.
Isa.43:9] Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
When they deliver up the elect before Satan, many shall hear the truth and repent and be saved.
Isa.43:10] Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
[11] I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
I, even I, twice for great emphasis. Besides him there is no other, he is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Let’s skip down to chapter 45 and pick it up with verse 21 and it reads.
Isa.45:21] Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
Even in the Old Testament he tells us of Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Revelation, God has been telling us, there is Salvation.
Isa.45:22] Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
[23] I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
We know this happens at the seventh trump. His warning from the beginning was that sins required a sacrifice, knowing that Christ would ultimately be the sacrifice for all his children. His promise to Abraham in Gen.22:1-18 when he provided the Lamb to be sacrificed. Let’s go to Luke chapter 2 and verse 1 reads.
Luke 2:1] And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
[2] (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
[3] And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
[4] And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
[5] To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
[6] And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
[7] And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
From Luke 1:5 we know that this was in September because of the course of Abia, Jesus was conceived on Dec.25th.
Luke 2:8] And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Shepherds don’t keep flocks out in the fields in the winter time.
Luke 2:9] And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
[10] And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
[11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Born in Bethlehem which means; House of Bread. Jesus our Savior is our Daily Bread. He is the Word of God.
Luke 2:12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
[13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
[14] Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Brace yourself, we were these angels (Host) in heaven singing praises to our LORD. We were with him before he placed our souls in these flesh bodies. Ecc.12:7, “And the spirit returns to the Father who gave it.” Let’s go to Acts 5 where Peter and John and the rest of the apostles were sent by God to testify in the temple. The high priest had them arrested, but the angel of the LORD freed them, and they went back to the temple the next morning and continued teaching. Let’s pick it up with verse 28 and it reads.
Acts 5:28] Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.
They were the ones that crucified the Lord Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
Acts 5:29] Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
[30] The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
Yes, they crucified Jesus. Now, why we came here.
Acts 5:31] Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
Stephen would say in Acts 7:54 “I see him standing at the right hand of God in heaven.” When he said this to these very people that Peter is talking to, they stoned him to death.
Acts 5:32] And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
[33] When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.
Those who obey him are given the Holy Spirit. Jesus would tell us if you love me then God and I will abide in you, and wherever you have the two, you have the Spirit. But, why did they crucify our Lord and Savior? Let’s finish this lesson in Hebrews, where we find the why. Heb.2 and verse 9 reads.
Heb.2:9] But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
Lower than the angels simply means of the flesh. Let’s not overlook the reason; that he should taste death for every man.
Heb.2:10] For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
His sufferings made him perfect, made him Savior to all that repent.
Heb.2:11] For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
The Lord abides in us when we abide in him, the Son of God calls us brothers.
Heb.2:12] Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
[13] And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
Only the knowledge of the Trinity can this verse make sense. The “I” being Jesus the Son, and the “Him” is God the Father. Now, the reason for his crucifixion.
Heb.2:14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Jesus can now destroy Death, the Devil. Because of that wicked one and his seed that crucified our Lord Jesus. The same seed, the Kenites, that Peter was talking to in Acts 5.
Heb.2:15] And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Sin is considered here as bondage.
Heb.2:16] For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
Gen.3:14-15. Two seeds, one of the woman and the other of the Serpent.
Heb.2:17] Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Speaking of that Mercy Seat. This is what makes him the Savior, he came in the flesh to defeat death (devil) and to destroy his power over all that sinned. Our sins, that upon repentance we have salvation. Only the Lamb of God could have done this. GOD the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the three being one are the Lamb of God. Written in John 1:14 and it reads.
John 1:14] And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Back to Heb.2 and verse 18 reads.
Heb.2:18] For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
Satan was given the opportunity to tempt the Lord Jesus in Mat.4. But because he could not be tempted, he succored us from our sins. Before we close this study, I want to remind everyone of the reason for this earth age. Satan was one of the two that protected the mercy seat. But, because of pride he fell, meaning he wanted to sit on the seat. This would bring on the Katabole G2602, the overthrow of Satan. That seat was for Jesus Christ only, but Satan thought he would become the Savior. In God’s anger, he destroyed the earth age and brought on this earth age, that everyone would come in the flesh to make their choice. Are you going to follow Satan or Jesus? Jesus paid the price on the cross so that through repentance we would have Salvation. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
