It is my hope that all head of households read this lesson with their families, and take the Communion following this Passover study. Please have your sacraments ready for Communion. A saltine cracker will suffice for the unleavened bread and a small amount of red wine or grape juice (keeping it from the vine) will do. Please find in our topical teaching Appx.156. written by Dr. E.W. Bullinger, concerning the last six days of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This week is the Passover, we will study in today’s lesson what is the Passover and why, as Christians, do we observe the Passover. Let’s go to Exodus 12 where we find the first Passover, and how it received its name. The LORD speaking to Moses, Exo.12 and verse 1 reads.
Exo.12:1] And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
[2] This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
This month is called Abib or Nisan. It begins at the spring equinox.
Exo.12:3] Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Separate the Passover lamb from the flock on the tenth day. Back in these days the day began at sundown the night before.
Exo.12:4] And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
If your family is too small then bring a neighbor and his family into your home for the feast. This Passover lamb is to valuable to waste, it is a sacrifice to the LORD.
Exo.12:5] Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
[6] And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
Very important to understand that the day began the night before at sundown. We are used to midnight to midnight, not so with the Hebrew calendar. Also, we find here that the Passover lamb was to be killed on the fourteenth day. This is important because Jesus Christ became our Passover Lamb. He continues in verse 7 and it reads.
Exo.12:7] And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
This is how we bless our homes today to keep out all evil spirits. We use olive oil in place of the blood to anoint our door post. The blood ordinance was done away with at the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ means “the Anointed One.”
Exo.12:8] And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
The leavened bread represents sin. We are to keep sin out of our homes.
Exo.12:9] Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
Sodden simply means to boil, do not boil the meat. But fire for the reason that it is a sacrifice to the LORD.
Exo.12:10] And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
[11] And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’s passover.
Prepare yourselves to leave in haste, this is the first Passover and after this they will depart out of Egypt.
Exo.12:12] For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
This would be the tenth plague the LORD gives unto Pharoah. It is this plague that delivers Israel out of the land of Egypt.
Exo.12:13] And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
The death angel will “Passover” your house, and you shall not be harmed. This is why when we anoint the doorpost of our homes with olive oil, we send all evil within our homes back to the Father.
Exo.12:14] And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
This became the High Sabbath, one of three, The Passover, The Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) and The Feast of Tabernacles. These two, the Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles, were two weeks each. And Israel would come to Jerusalem from all around the world to keep this tradition that the LORD would say “Keep it a feast by ordinance forever.” And we will do the LORD’s Word as well. Now let’s go to 1Cor.5:4-8 and it reads
1Cor.5:4] In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
When we come together for the Passover his Spirit and his power are with us.
1Cor.5:5] To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
Jesus is our Savior. The wine represents the cup of his salvation. The unleavened bread represents his body.
1Cor.5:6] Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
[7] Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Here is why we keep the Passover as Christians, Christ became our Passover. He did not become our Easter, that is a pagan holiday.
1Cor.5:8] Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Remember leaven is sin, keep it out of your home. Passover is the high sabbath, it is not the day of the week that was given for rest. Though Christ being our Passover we rest in him. And anyone that does not rest in our Lord, has no rest. When Jesus was crucified, he was crucified on the day before Passover, this would be before sunset on Wednesday. Making the Tuesday night the time of his trial, this being illegal in the Hebrew law. Now, Jesus being crucified on Wednesday must have been put in the tomb by sundown. Wednesday sundown to Thursday sundown, one day. Thursday sundown to Friday sundown, two days. Friday sundown to Saturday sundown, three days. Then sometime during the night he rose from the dead. Saturday was the weekly sabbath, this is why Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came on the first day of the week, Sunday, to anoint the body of Jesus. Mat.28:1.
Now let’s prepare the sacraments for Communion. A soda cracker will do for the unleavened bread. One soda cracker can be broken for up to six people. A small amount of wine, grape juice for the children is ok, keep it of the vine. I hold both in one hand, and place my other hand over them both and speak to the LORD.
Father, bless these sacraments for the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Communion
For Communion we will let our Lord and Savior do the talking. Mat.26:26 and it reads.
Mat.26:26] And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
We take the bread now and eat.
Mat.26:27] And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
[28] For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
We take the cup and we drink.
This is our Communion with the Lord, you may take this Communion whenever you feel. We here at The Christ Ministries will do this three times a year, but whenever you feel you need to, never hesitate, take of the Communion again. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
