In today’s study we have the following titles. Verses 1-8 Jesus heals a paralyzed man. Verses 9-13 Jesus calls Matthew. Verses 14-17 The question about fasting. Verses 18-19 The ruler’s daughter. 20-26 The woman touching his garment. Verses 27-31 Two blind men receive their sight. Verses 32-35 A dumb man speaks. Verses 36-38 Few laborers for the tasks. Matthew 9 and verse 1 reads.
Mat.9:1] And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.
His own city would be Capernaum as we learned in Matthew 4:13, And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum.
Mat.9:2] And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
This will upset the scribes. Jesus just said your sins are forgiven. Only God can forgive sins, showing he was God with us, Emmanuel (Isa.7:14, Mat.1:23). Don’t overlook he saw their faith.
Mat.9:3] And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.
[4] And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
Jesus knew their thoughts, it is written in Psalms 139 and verse 1 reads.
Psa.139:1] O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
[2] Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
Now he will prove them, these are some of my favorite verses in the bible coming up.
Mat.9:5] For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
[6] But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.
[7] And he arose, and departed to his house.
But that he told him without touching him proved he was indeed the Son of God. Showing them the power of the LORD was with him.
Mat.9:8] But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
Remember in Matthew 8:27, Jesus even calmed the wind and the sea.
Mat.9:9] And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
Matthew, the writer of this gospel, was named Levi. Let’s go to Mark 2 and verse 14 reads.
Mark 2:14] And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
Let’s look at these names. Levi means; joined to. Matthew means; gift of Yah. Sitting at the receipt of custom, simply means he had a job, and his job was collecting taxes. Often referred to as sinners because they would cheat most people out of taxes, but I know Matthew would not be one of them. Because the LORD called him, he is a chosen one. Back to Matthew 9 and verse 10 reads.
Mat.9:10] And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
Here is where a lot of people think Matthew was a sinner. Because it says publicans, meaning government workers, but notice it says sat with Jesus and his disciples, Matthew was a disciple.
Mat.9:11] And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
Reminds me a lot of the churches today, these Pharisees are too good to be with sinners. We’ll see how Jesus handles this, let it be for our example.
Mat.9:12] But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
[13] But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Jesus asked them to search the scriptures and see if they could find where it says this. I wonder if they even knew the prophets, their fathers killed most of the prophets as these were Kenites. Let’s go to Hosea 6 and verse 6 reads.
Hos.6:6] For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
Remember Jesus said for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Paul said it best in 1Timothy 1 and verse 15 reads.
1Tim.1:15] This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Paul, when he was Saul, persecuted the church. A man who studied at the feet of Gamaliel, being zealous for the LORD, he overlooked Isaiah 7:14.
1Tim.1:16] Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
For we all are sinners, but we teach Jesus Christ crucified. With that, on repentance all our sins are forgiven and we are promised life everlasting. Back to Matthew 9 and verse 14 reads.
Mat.9:14] Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?
This is a good question, since it was custom to fast twice a week. Luke 18:12-14 has the example of the Pharisee and the poor man at the altar of God. Luke 18 and verse 14 Jesus answered.
Luke 18:14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Back to Matthew 9 and verse 15 reads.
Mat.9:15] And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.
How can they mourn if I Am still with them? Fasting is a sign of mourning, maybe because these disciples of John the Baptist are in mourning. But, nonetheless, it is Jesus that is greater than John. Also, look at this as the marriage to the Lamb, we are waiting for the seventh trump or second advent to come.
Mat.9:16] No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.
Here he compares his children to a piece of cloth. If you understand sowing a patch on your jeans, a new patch will pucker on an old garment. This is how he compares teaching truth to those that have been taught falsely from the pulpit. Another comparison is said next, and it reads.
Mat.9:17] Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
Again, he compares his children, this time to bottles. We are not talking about glass bottles, but of lamb skin bottles. After new wine is put into a new skin, the wine will expand with fermentation and a new skin is still pliable to expand with the wine. But an old bottle (skin) is no longer pliable and will burst when the new wine is put within it. So, when you teach truth to one that loves the LORD, you must first correct the lies that they have been taught, then the truth will be received. This is why judgement begins at the pulpit. 1Peter 4 and verse 17 reads.
1Pet.4:17] For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
Back to Matthew 9 and verse 18 reads.
Mat.9:18] While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
[19] And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.
This man’s name is Jairus and he is a ruler of the local synagogue we find in Mark 5:22. Notice his faith is great in the LORD.
Mat.9:20] And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
A few things to cover here. First this woman’s issue of blood has been an issue for twelve years. And no one could heal her, not the physicians or priests. Second, 12 in biblical numerology is governmental perfection. Twelve tribes of Israel, twelve apostles and so forth. The next thing I want to talk about is this hem of his garment. This word will get out, if you only touch the hem of his garment, you shall be healed. Mat.14:36. And many will be healed, for just touching his garment showed great faith.
Mat.9:21] For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
[22] But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Now when it says “From that hour” it meant she was immediately healed.
Mat.9:23] And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
A common tradition which I first found in 2Chronicles 35:25 when king Josiah died.
Mat.9:24] He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
This is prophecy fulfilled, some would say, speaking of Psalms 22:7, but I would remind you that that prophecy was for the crucifixion and not for this moment. For this moment I would remind you that the LORD will not be mocked. Galatians 6:7.
Mat. 9:25] But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.
[26] And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.
Notice that Jesus put out the unbelievers before he healed this girl. This is our example today to put out the unbelievers from among us when we anoint in the name of Jesus Christ.
Mat.9:27] And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
Calling Jesus “Son of David” shows great faith and knowledge of who Jesus is. They know and understand the Key of David. Is it a wonder why Jesus immediately called them to him.
Mat.9:28] And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
[29] Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
They must have had faith or they wouldn’t have been healed.
Mat.9:30] And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.
[31] But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
Out of joy they couldn’t contain themselves, it wasn’t out of disobedience. Let’s look at this more closely. The blind received their sight, they cried out Son of David, let’s go to Revelation 3 and verse 6 reads.
Rev.3:6] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Ears to hear and eyes to see, only the LORD can open eyes and ears to his Word. Now, let’s see what the angel has to say to one of the only two churches that Jesus had no problems with. The other being Smyrna in Rev.2.
Rev.3:7] And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
The LORD can open eyes and he can close the eyes.
Rev.3:8] I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
Kept his Word and has not denied his name, let that sink in a moment.
Rev.3:9] Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.
To understand the Key of David is to know the genealogy of the woman’s seed and the serpent’s seed. To know who are the Kenites and know who claim to be of Judah but do lie and are the serpent’s seed. Now, this at your feet simply means they are behind you when all knees will bow at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Back to Matthew 9 and verse 32 reads.
Mat.9:32] As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.
Dumb simply means unable to speak, we would call it mute today. But that he was possessed with a devil implies it is because of the possession he is dumb, mute.
Mat.9:33] And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
Never seen because the Son of God was never among them before this time.
Mat.9:34] But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.
The Pharisees show their problem and their jealousy here. They are jealous because they cannot heal or cast out devils. Not that they would cast them out, because they are Kenites. We’ll prove this as we study Mat.13 the parable of the tares. This is better taught in Luke 11 and verse 14 reads.
Luke 11:14] And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.
[15] But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
[16] And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
[17] But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
[18] If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
[19] And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
[20] But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.
Their own children could not cast out devils (speaking of the priest or Pharisees) proving it was they that are Kenites. But more importantly, it is Jesus who is Immanuel, God with us, that can cast out devils. Jesus would give us this power in Luke 10:19 to send evil spirits back to the Father in his name. Back to Matthew 9 and verse 35 reads.
Mat.9:35] And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
[36] But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
I want you to think of the end times, the times in which we live today. Now, let’s go to Zechariah 10 and verse 1 reads.
Zec.10:1] Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.
To feed his sheep in these end times the Word of God, to open eyes and ears to his Word, that no man can take from you.
Zec.10:2] For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.
We see here Jesus was speaking of false teachers to his flock. And we see here in Zechariah it is prophesied that there will be false teachers in these end times. Remember always Amos 8 and verse 11 reads.
Amos 8:11] Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
So, Jesus is saying many false teachers were among them at that time, and for our example, many will be here at the pulpits today. This is why I went to Revelation 3 above to remind you only God can open eyes or shut them. And he will shut many eyes in these end times. But yours he can open, just seek his word. Back to Matthew 9 and verse 37 reads.
Mat.9:37] Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
[38] Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
The harvest is for the end times. This is where we come in, our works are to teach the Word of God to his children. And the Elect and the Remnant shall teach the truth, this is the latter rain of the end times, our destinies. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
