Matthew 5
[1] And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
[2] And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Dividing the word of God, knowing who Christ is talking to. He is talking to his disciples here.
[3] Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed is “happy” in the Greek, G3107. “for when we are weak then am I strong.” Also James Ch.2:5 reads…
James 2:5] Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
So the poor are rich in faith. Back to Matthew.
Mat.5:4] Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
We mourn when we see Gods children being persecuted. This we find in Isaiah chapter 61. And it reads.
Isa.61:3] To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
I’m not going to apologize for the interruptions but rather show you that Gods word is complete from the beginning to end. Back to Matthew.
Mat.5:5] Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Meek means “not prideful”. We can find in Psalms Ch.37:11…
Psa.37:11] But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
Back to Matthew
Mat.5:6] Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Amos 8:11. “the hunger in the end times is not for bread, but for hearing the word of the Lord.” But the Lord shall fill us if we search for him. For this we go back to Isaiah.
Isa.55:1] Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
[2] Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
And in Isaiah Ch. 65.13 it reads.
[13] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed:
“but as for me and my family, we shall serve the Lord.” Back to Matthew.
Mat.5:7] Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Mercy means compassion.
[8] Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
[9] Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
[10] Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed for being persecuted for doing what’s right. 2 Timothy.3:12 reads.
2Tim.3:12] Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Back to Matthew.
Mat.5:11] Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Yes, we will be persecuted for his name’s sake. We must make sure it’s not for our glory. We must make sure it’s for His Glory. “His names sake” for being called Christians.
[12] Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Jesus is talking about “from righteous Able to Zecharias.”
[13] Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
It is good to be salty. Teach Gods word boldly.
[14] Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
[15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
[16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
This Light is Christ. Let him shine through you.
[17] Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Do not let anyone tell you that we are not under the law anymore. That is a lie. Jesus just said so. Until this earth age ends, nothing changes.
[19] Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
I would hate to be in the shoes of those pastors who teach that. What does 1Pet.4:17 read?
1Pet.4:17] For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
Judgement begins at the pulpit. Back to Matthew.
Mat.5:20] For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
These scribes and Pharisees sat in the seat of Moses. And they wish to kill Jesus, breaking the 6th. commandment of God. want to know “who killed Jesus”, it was the scribes and Pharisees.
[21] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
What is the Judgement? It is the death penalty. Lets go to Due.19:11-13. And it reads.
Due.19:11] But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
[12] Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
[13] Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
But did you know that Rape is considered as murder? Lets reads Due.22:25.
Due.22:25] But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:
[26] But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:
If only we would keep his commandments and his judgements we wouldn’t have so much evil in this world today. Back to Matthew.
Mat.5:22] But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Note here that brother is one born of Israel, and a gentile is a neighbor. Judged by peers for little things but this “fool” is judging someone to hell. We are not to judge any man to hell. God does not need our help. This is his job only and anyone that does his job is committing a great sin.
[23] Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
[24] Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
If you have sinned and not repented, then repent. We can’t get along with everyone. And this is not saying that.
[25] Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
[26] Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Whiles in the way, means in these end times don’t speak when you’re not suppose to. Theres a time for everything. Hard to serve God when you are in prison.
[27] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
[28] But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
It is not a sin for young people to be attracted to one another. And to say so can chase them away from God. Think of this as nationally. As a nation goes there goes the people .
[29] And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
[30] And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Speaking here of the many membered church body. Don’t let someone that creates chaos into the church. Rebuke them and send them out.
[31] It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
[32] But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
I believe that upon repentance all sin is forgiven. If not, I would not be teaching the word of God. For, by the blood of Christ my sins are forgiven. That being said, divorcement is not the unforgivable sin. Meaning that it is forgivable. And when God forgives sin, it is blotted out. And He says don’t bring it up again. Many churches put their congregation back under law. When Christ blood was shed, we have forgiveness after repentance. Lets look at Jer.3:8 and it reads.
Jer.3:8] And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.
So, what we read here is that God is a divorcee also. Stop judging people for being divorced, it is a forgivable sin upon repentance. Or let yourself be judged for your sins also. Let he cast the first stone. Churches have the habit of putting their congregation under bondage when the truth shall set you free. Back to Matthew.
Mat.5:33] Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
[34] But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
[35] Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
[36] Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
[37] But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Yes is yes, no is no.
[38] Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
[39] But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Don’t be surprised if a brother in Christ can’t handle the truth, if they have been taught a lie. But have compassion on them and show them the word. Even this may not help and they might strike at you. Because you have overloaded their donkey, so to speak.
[40] And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
[41] And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
[42] Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
[43] Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
[44] But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
[45] That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
[46] For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
[47] And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
[48] Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Perfect means, mature these last verses need no interruptions because it is common sense. Even an evil man can love his son or family. But to love your enemies, that is hard. The Lord says to show them kindness. And it shall be as heaping coals of fire on their heads. Lets go to his throne.
Father we thank you for your word. Bless all that love you, in Jesus’s precious name. Amen.
