Today we are going to finish the Gospel of Matthew, so let’s get started. And it reads.
Matthew 28
Mat.28:1] In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
In appx.165 of the Companion Bible, Bullinger gives the best time table of the Lords last days. He was crucified on a Wednesday, and after Saturday, some time in the night he rose again. Giving him 3days in the tomb.
Mat.28:2] And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
[3] His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
The angel of the Lord most times is talking about the LORD himself. But not always, sometimes its Gabriel, Dan.7:9, who stands by the Lord, like in Rev. 20:4 it could be talking about the angels that surround the throne of God. in this case I think it is simply a messenger of God giving these two keepers reason to fear. And I’m sure they high tailed it out of there.
Mat.28:4] And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
The presence of an angel is awesome.
Mat.28:5] And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
[6] He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
[7] And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
Remember in Matthew 26:31, and it reads.
Mat.26:31] Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
[32] But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
We talked about this, how the disciples couldn’t remember and now has come to pass. Back to Matthew 28:8.
Mat.28:8] And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
[9] And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
[10] Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
In John 20:17 it reads better.
John 20:17] Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
Touch me not. What he said was don’t hold me up, because he had not yet ascended to the Father. He didn’t get rude or insensitive to the women, but rather compassionately needed to go, but would meet them again. Back to Matthew 28:11 and it reads.
Mat.28:11] Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
[12] And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
[13] Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.
[14] And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
[15] So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
They knew he said he would raise his temple, his body, in 3 days. They bribed the soldiers, the temple soldiers, to lie. And they have been lying till this day as well. Rev.2:9 and 3:9 say who they are. Let’s read Rev.2:9
Rev.2:9] I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
These are the Kenites. We have learned about them in this whole book of Matthew. Back to Matthew 28:16 and it reads.
Mat.28:16] Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
[17] And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
We know in the gospel of John that this is Thomas. Lets’ go to John 20:24-29 and it reads.
John 20:24] But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
[25] The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
[26] And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
[27] Then saith he to Thomas, reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
[28] And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
[29] Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Okay, I came here for that last verse. Blessed are those, that have not seen, but believe. Blessed are we who believe in Jesus Christ, and were not present with them to see Jesus. Yet, we believe. Back to Matthew 28 and verse 18 reads.
Mat.28:18] And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Let’s remember Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23. Emmanuel, God with us. and John 1:14. And the word became flesh, and walked among us. but take time to read…Acts 2:36, and Romans 14:9 as well as any of your references in your bible. Just to get a bigger picture of the depths of Gods’ word.
Mat.28:19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Any questions on how to baptize after this verse. Some say only in the name of Jesus, then they never read this verse. This also gives you the trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (correctly translated). We know that they are all One, the Father, is the Spirit, the Son was him in the flesh, and the Holy Spirit was the Comforter that was sent among us.
Mat.28:20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Keeping his commandments. And his doctrine. Let’s finish with Acts 2:42 and it reads.
Acts2:42] And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
That was Matthew, an awesome book, filled with the words of Jesus Christ. I hope I did a good job bringing to you a better way of understanding Gods word. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and I ask that you bless all that love you, in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
