In today’s study we have verses 1-2 titled The chief priest plot against Jesus. Verses 3-9 Jesus anointed at Bethany. Verses 10-11 The conspiracy of Judas. Verses 12-25 Jesus eats the Passover with his disciples. Verses 26-31 Peter’s denial foretold. Verses 32-42 Gethsemane. Verses 43-52 The betrayal and arrest of Jesus. Verses 53-65 Jesus before the high priest. Verses 66-72 Peter denies Jesus. Mark 14 and verse 1 reads.
Mark 14:1] After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.
[2] But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.
To put the Passover Lamb to death must be on the 14th. day of Abib (H24) the first month, and in the evening. Due.12:6. But these priests fear the people because they know Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ. God’s word says this must happen this way, the priests think they can change the Word of God, they won’t.
Mark 14:3] And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
This Simon the leper was obviously healed of his leprosy because a priest must deem him clean before anyone could be around him. Now, this woman is anointing Jesus for his burial, the disciples won’t understand. Christ means; The anointed one, the Messiah. Jesus will explain.
Mark 14:4] And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
[5] For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
First of all, to say it was a waste is appalling. Second, if they really cared for the poor, then why didn’t they give to the poor what was in their sack.
Mark 14:6] And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
[7] For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
[8] She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
[9] Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
And we just memorialized her again simply by reading this passage in the bible. Notice that Jesus said “Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world”, the gospel of Mark has not yet been written when he said this.
Mark 14:10] And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.
I truly believe that Judas was chosen by God in the first earth age for this reason, maybe he had to volunteer. Because it fulfills prophecy.
Mark 14:11] And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.
In Mat.26:15 we learned it was for thirty pieces of silver, the price of a slave. Let’s go to Zechariah 11:12 and it reads.
Zec.11:12] And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
Prophecies are being fulfilled left and right as we go through this study today. Let’s go to Psalms 41 and verse 9 reads.
Psa.41:9] Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Let’s see how Jesus handles this. Back to Mark 14 and verse 12 reads.
Mark 14:12] And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?
About this unleavened bread. Today it represents sin, have no sin in your house for seven days. From the time of the fourteenth day until the twenty first day. Let’s go to Exodus 12 and verse 15 reads.
Exo.12:15] Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
[16] And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
[17] And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
Notice this ordinance is forever.
Exo.12:18] In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.
[19] Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.
[20] Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.
Today this unleavened bread is the body of Jesus Christ, it has become our sacrament. Back to Mark 14 and verse 13 reads.
Mark 14:13] And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
[14] And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
[15] And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.
Planned ahead of time by Jesus, The Word of God, proving here that not only what is written but also what is spoken by the Word will happen exactly in that way.
Mark 14:16] And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
They found it exactly as Jesus said it would be. Let’s go to 1Cor.5 and verse 6 reads.
1Cor.5:6] Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
Leaven is said for sin, he said; know a little sin in the congregation spreads throughout the church.
1Cor.5:7] Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Christ is our Passover, the sacrifice for our sins, and not easter which is a pagan ritual. His blood on the cross was for the remission of sins. Never forget that verse.
1Cor.5:8] Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
This would be our sacraments, the unleavened bread for his body and the wine for his blood. Keep it holy, keep the feast and not traditions of men like easter. Back to Mark 14 and verse 17 reads.
Mark 14:17] And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
[18] And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
[19] And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
None of them could believe any of the others would do such a thing, now self-doubt comes into each of them.
Mark 14:20] And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.
[21] The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
Speaking of the shame that man will have to endure. I say this because some would teach Judas would go to hell. But I don’t think so, I think Judas volunteered for this in the first earth age after all Jesus had chosen him. Let’s go to Isaiah 6 and verse 8 reads.
Isa.6:8] Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
Many were chosen long before coming in the flesh. Now comes the verses we use at Passover. Back to Mark 14 and verse 22 reads.
Mark 14:22] And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
His body, he took the stripes and we get the healing.
Mark 14:23] And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
[24] And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
His blood on the cross, doing away with the blood ordinances because he became the Passover Lamb. For the remission of sins that on repentance we are forgiven and made anew. We learned in my Topical Teaching “Baptism and to be Baptized” that we must be made anew, that is the New Testament, Jesus Christ.
Mark 14:25] Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
It is true that Jesus would be called a Nazarene, but that does not put him under the vow of a Nazarene. Meaning he was free to drink wine while with us in the flesh. And this shows he drank wine with his disciples. John the Baptist on the other hand was under the vow of a Nazarene and could not drink of the vine, that is to say wine.
Mark 14:26] And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Some think these are Psalms 111-113 and others think 115-118, the first set begins with Praise Ye the LORD. The second set finishes with Praise Ye the LORD. How about maybe they sang all of them, just an educated guess by me.
Mark 14:27] And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
Written in Zec.13 and verse 6 reads.
Zec.6] And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
What are these wounds in thine hands? They crucified our LORD, that’s what they are!
Zec.13:7] Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
Awake O sword is; it is written in the Word. A lot of prophecies being fulfilled as we go through this study. Remember Mat.5 and verse 17 reads.
Mat.5:17] Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
[19] Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Do not overlook “And teach them”. Back to Mark 14 and verse 28 reads.
Mark 14:28] But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
Telling them he will be crucified and will meet them in Galilee. Now, why couldn’t they remember this? I believe it is for our sakes in these end times. It is written that there will be a second advent. Satan comes at the sixth trump and the True Christ returns at the seventh trump. Notice the I Am risen, his holy name.
Mark 14:29] But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.
[30] And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.
It has been brought up to me once that we have a contradiction between this scripture and Matthew 26:34. Matthew just said “before the cock crow” he didn’t say once. There is never a contradiction between any of God’s Word, just read it more carefully. Now about this scripture. This will hurt Peter very badly, again I believe it was done as an example for us in these end times. We know we must stand with the gospel armor on when we are delivered up before Satan.
Mark 14:31] But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.
Smite the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered. Zec.13:7. Not only what is written, but also what is spoken.
Mark 14:32] And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
[33] And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
[34] And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
Pay attention Watchmen, this is written for us.
Mark 14:35] And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
Not speaking of the hour that was at hand, but of the hour of temptation. Jesus is the Word of God, he knows what is written must happen exactly as it is written.
Mark 14:36] And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
Many pastors teach Jesus had a weak moment here, by ignorance or purposeful deceit you be the judge. Jesus just asked if it were possible, take away this cup. This cup is the cup of wrath that is poured out at the second advent. Let’s go to Isaiah 51 and verse 17 reads.
Isa.51:17] Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
[18] There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
[19] These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
These two things, desolation and destruction. Apollyon G623 means; destroyer. A. destroyer (that is Satan). and Abaddon H11 and G3 which means destruction. We find both of them in Rev.9:11. The famine of the end times is for hearing the Word of God. Amos 8:11. And the sword is the Word of God. Rev.1:15.
Isa.51:20] Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God.
[21] Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:
[22] Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
Listen closely to that last verse. He has taken it out of his hands, meaning it would be asked of him by Jesus while in the flesh. And has promised “Thou shalt no more drink it again” meaning Jesus is the Living Word and his Word will not be broken. Now if you want to do more study on this, here’s a little help. Isa.51:17-22, Jer.25:15-17, Eze.23:31-33, Zec.12:2, Rev.14:10, Rev.16:19, Rev.17:4, Rev.18:6. Back to Mark 14 and verse 37 reads.
Mark 14:37] And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
[38] Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
Notice he said for one hour, the hour of temptation is divided into two. The first half is for the first beasts, the one world order. The second half is the time of the Dragon, that old serpent, the devil, called Satan. Rev.12:9. This is written for an example to us today.
Mark 14:39] And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
[40] And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.
[41] And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
[42] Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.
This wasn’t for his disciples at that time, but for you and me in these end times. As for that moment of time, his prayer was answered. The prophecy of David, the crucifixion, would come to pass exactly as God’s Word said it would. Psa.22.
Mark 14:43] And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
Speaking of Judas, now we must remember that the high priest did not want to do it on the night of the Passover, Judas has made this happen. Fulfilling prophecy. Notice this is not with the Roman army, but with those that protected the high priest. A simple army with pitchforks.
Mark 14:44] And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.
Betrays Jesus with the kiss of death.
Mark 14:45] And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.
[46] And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
[47] And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
The name of this servant of the high priest was Malchus as we learn in John 18:10. He would be the third one that gets Peter to deny Jesus. Let’s go to Rev.13 and verse 9 reads.
Rev.13:9] If any man have an ear, let him hear.
[10] He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
This is why Peter cut off the ear of Malchus. The sword of the LORD is the tongue of Jesus Christ and it is the Word of God. Rev.1:15. Back to Mark 14 and verse 48 reads.
Mark 14:48] And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?
[49] I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.
Telling them that all prophecies concerning him are written and will happen exactly as they are written. They did not take him while he was teaching in the temple because they feared the people.
Mark 14:50] And they all forsook him, and fled.
The disciples fled, fulfilling Zec.13:7.
Mark 14:51] And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:
[52] And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
Some say this is Lazareth, I say this is Mark John the writer of this book. After all he was also a disciple, just not of the twelve, and would have been around to be a witness of all things to write this gospel. Look at it this way, who else witnessed this young man being grabbed. Also notice, there was a reason they all fled, they were taking all who they could grab.
Mark 14:53] And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
In the Hebrew law it is unlawful to hold court at night, yet these are all at the ready.
Mark 14:54] And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
He didn’t scatter far, but that what the Word of God says, it shall happen. It will hurt Peter, but for our example this must happen.
Mark 14:55] And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
[56] For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
None of their testimonies matched, these are false witnesses.
Mark 14:57] And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
These certain were paid to testify falsely.
Mark 14:58] We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.
This is a lie. What does God think of false witnesses, let’s go to Proverbs 6 and verse 16 reads.
Prov.6:16] These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
[17] A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
[18] An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
[19] A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
These six things God hates, that’s right he hates. This seventh one is an abomination to the LORD, warning to the media of today. Now, after Jesus overturned the tables in the temple because they sold the grace of God for money, they asked by what authority does he do this. John 2 and verse 18 reads.
John 2:18] Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
[19] Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
Jesus said if you Destroy this temple then he would raise it up in three days. He was speaking of his body being crucified. And these witnesses knew they were lying and bearing false witness. The law in Hebrew says whatever the false witness would bear against another, the same sentence should be given to him. Back to Mark 14 and verse 59 reads.
Mark 14:59] But neither so did their witness agree together.
They couldn’t match their testimonies.
Mark 14:60] And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
Fulfilling prophecy again, this time Isa.53:7. Before we go on, let’s go and read some of the prophecy of Isaiah, Isa.53 and verse 3 reads.
Isa.53:3] He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
The sheep scattered and so many more prophecies are written here, listen.
Isa.53:4] Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
[5] But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Jesus means; Yah’s Savior.
Isa.53:6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
[7] He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
He not only said not a word in his own defense at the trial of the high priest, but also with Pilate in chapter 15 to come.
Isa.53:8] He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
The generation that will declare this is you and me.
Isa.53:9] And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Buried in his rich uncle Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb.
Isa.53:10] Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
To bruise his heels was the first prophecy in God’s Word. And because he also mentions his seed, let’s go there. Gen.3 and verse 15 reads.
Gen.3:15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
They bruised his heel when they nailed them to the cross. Notice he is speaking to the serpent, Satan. Now, between the two seeds is the woman’s seed and the serpent’s seed. Israel and the Kenites. Back to Isa.53 and verse 11 reads.
Isa.53:11] He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Crucified because of our sins, for he had none.
Isa.53:12] Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Between two malefactors, one on each side. Many prophecies here in the Old Testament, all will come to pass. Back to Mark 14 and verse 61 reads.
Mark 14:61] But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
Asked him, “Are you the Son of God.” Notice that he didn’t answer any of the lies, but when asked if he was the Son of God, he will answer. This is for a very good reason.
Mark 14:62] And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
This will upset the high priest, because he not only says I Am, being his Holy name, but lets them know of the two advents. Caiaphas knows scripture, and he knows this is the Son of God. Proving he is a Kenite and this will convict him before the LORD.
Mark 14:63] Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
Any further false witnesses.
Mark 14:64] Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
From righteous Abel to Zacharias whom they killed between the porch and the altar. All of these are Kenites, the seed of that wicked one. Here is the problem, they do not have authority to kill anyone. They are under Roman rule, and cannot put anyone to death.
Mark 14:65] And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.
Fulfilling Isa.53:4.
Mark 14:66] And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
[67] And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.
[68] But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.
Strike one.
Mark 14:69] And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
[70] And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.
His clothing and his speech gave him away.
Mark 14:71] But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
Strike two and three. The third was Malchus as we learn in John 18:10. Let’s not get too hard on Peter, after all Jesus would build his church on him. Jesus knows how great a man Peter is, he named him rock for the foundation of his church to rest on. But, let this be for our example and never forget 1Cor.10 and verse 11 reads.
1Cor.10:11] Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
And Mark 13 and verse 11 reads.
Mark 13:11] But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
Back to Mark 14 and verse 72 reads.
Mark 14:72] And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.
What the Word of God says will happen exactly as it is written, or in this case with Peter, as spoken. An awesome chapter, don’t miss the next lesson. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
