Today’s titles are; Verses 1-11 The triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Verses 12-14 Jesus curses a fig tree. Verses 15-19 Jesus cleanses the temple. Verses 20-26 The lesson from the withered fig tree. Verses 27-33 Jesus’ authority questioned. Mark 11 and verse 1 reads.
Mark 11:1] And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples,
Bethphage means; house of figs, and Bethany means; house of dates. Notice he always sends two, for a second witness.
Mark 11:2] And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him.
They will find what the LORD has planned ahead for.
Mark 11:3] And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.
[4] And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him.
Here in Mark it is written, “Where two ways met”. Jesus is the way, any other way is not of God.
Mark 11:5] And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?
[6] And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go.
Let them go because they had been waiting for this moment for it was planned. What we have here is prophecy coming to pass. This is the first advent, let’s go to Zechariah 9 and verse 9 reads.
Zec.9:9] Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
This was a sign that the Pharisees missed. We find in the next verse the second advent and it reads.
Zec.9:10] And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from river even to the ends of the earth.
That rod of discipline will come at the seventh trump. This is important for us to remember, that both advents are given in Zechariah 9:9-10. Back to Mark 11 and verse 7 reads.
Mark 11:7] And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.
First, this colt was never broken so that a man could ride. But that the LORD sat on him without any problems should not be a surprise. Second, notice they cast their garments on the colt, we should think of the gospel armor that we put on in these end times.
Mark 11:8] And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
[9] And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
[10] Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
Hosanna means; Save now. We are given a hint of who spoke this, it is our father David. Let’s go to Psalms 118 and verse 23 reads.
Psa.118:23] This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
[24] This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day of Salvation, the first advent.
Psa.118:25] Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
Save now, Hosanna.
Psa.118:26] Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
In the name of the LORD. Jesus G2424 Iēsous pronounced ee-ay-sooce’, is Greek and means; Yahoveh’s Savior. 1. Jesus, the Son of God, the Saviour of mankind, God incarnate. In Hebrew it is H3091 Yᵉhôwshûwaʻ pronounced yeh-ho-shoo’-ah or Joshua translated into English.
Psa.118:27] God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.
David, being a prophet also, knows that God would be sacrificed as the Lamb of God. The Savior has now arrived in Jerusalem. Back to Mark 11 and verse 11 reads.
Mark 11:11] And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.
He stopped and looked around at the temple, I don’t think he liked what he saw. Jesus won’t stay in any city after dark, perhaps a lesson in itself for us today.
Mark 11:12] And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:
[13] And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
[14] And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
Jesus knew when figs would be on a fig tree, after all he created all things. This is the Parable of the Fig Tree. I want to go to Mark 13 and verse 28 reads.
Mark 13:28] Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
[29] So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.
[30] Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
Jesus said to learn the parable of the Fig Tree. It is imperative for God’s Elect to know this parable. Let’s go to Jeremiah 24 and verse 1 reads.
Jer.24:1] The LORD shewed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of the LORD, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.
This prophecy is for the end times, the king of Babylon will be Satan claiming to be Jesus at the sixth trump.
Jer.24:2] One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.
The first prophecy given in God’s word is in Gen.3:14-15. The good figs are the woman’s seed and the bad figs are the serpent’s seed.
Jer.24:3] Then said the LORD unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
[4] Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
[5] Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge them that are carried away captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good.
The next captivity is when Satan is here claiming to be Christ.
Jer.24:6] For I will set mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up.
This prophecy came to pass in 1948 when Israel became a nation again. No other time in history has a nation ceased to exist, then came into existence again.
Jer.24:7] And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.
The spirit of Elijah will turn the hearts of the people back to their fathers, plural.
Jer.24:8] And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt:
[9] And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them.
[10] And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.
The serpent’s seed are the Kenites that we see in abundance in the world today. Now, Jesus told us to learn this parable, I have done a good work on The Parable of the Fig Tree that you can find in Topical Teachings. Please find time to read it. Back to Mark 11 and verse 15 reads.
Mark 11:15] And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
Remember verse 11, Jesus was not happy of what he saw in the temple. It is not lawful for any money to be exchanged in the house of the LORD. What we have here is the Pharisees are exchanging money for cheap sacrifices when they were supposed to bring the best of their flocks or best of their fruits from their crops. We see this today with our churches that teach their congregation to fly away instead of putting on the gospel armor and stand against Satan.
Mark 11:16] And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
No commerce in the house of the LORD.
Mark 11:17] And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.
When Jesus brings up scripture, we better read it, let’s go to Isaiah 56 and verse 7 reads.
Isa.56:7] Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
Let’s go to Jeremiah 7 and verse 11 reads.
Jer.7:11] Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.
Back to Mark 11 and verse 18 reads.
Mark 11:18] And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.
Proving they were Kenites, wanting to kill him. Because Jesus taught truth and they had been teaching lies, false doctrines. What we have here are two figs. Prophesied in Psalms 2 and verse 1 reads.
Psa.2:1] Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
[2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
[3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
Back to Mark 11 and verse 19 reads.
Mark 11:19] And when even was come, he went out of the city.
Again, notice that Jesus never stays overnight in the cities.
Mark 11:20] And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
[21] And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
[22] And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
Simply have faith in God. Let’s finish Psalms 2, verse 4 reads.
Psa.2:4] He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
[5] Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
[6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
[7] I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
The first advent will come to pass. Jesus, the only begotten of the LORD.
Psa.2:8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
[9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
[10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
[11] Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
[12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
The second advent will come to pass also exactly as it is written. Back to Mark 11 and verse 23 reads.
Mark 11:23] For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Written for us today, this is the faith of the mustard seed. Mountain is nation. A man can move a nation from going in the wrong direction and return to God. We see this battle between good and evil today in our own streets.
Mark 11:24] Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Let’s go to James 1 and verse 5 reads.
James 1:5] If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
[6] But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
God will provide the bricks, but you must do the work. Back to Mark 11 and verse 25 reads.
Mark 11:25] And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
[26] But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Said here to remind us that our sins are forgiven only if we have forgiven our brothers trespasses against us. Mat.6:12,14-15. Don’t forget it takes repentance.
Mark 11:27] And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
They saw him come in on the colt, the foal of an ass. Showing us they did not know scripture.
Mark 11:28] And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?
The LORD has blinded them to truth, and they question the Son of God. This is written for an example to us today. Never argue with those whose eyes cannot see.
Mark 11:29] And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
[30] The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
[31] And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
[32] But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
[33] And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
They knew, and could not tell Jesus. Jesus, being the Authority, did not need to argue with these Kenites. They polluted His temple, they taught false doctrine. No need to argue with them that could not hear the word of the Lord. Our example today in this lesson is don’t argue, just leave them to their own demise. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
