LUKE 24

We finish the great book of Luke today. Luke, The Light giver. Our titles for today’s study are; Verses 1-12 The resurrection. Verses 13-35 On the road to Emmaus. 36-48 Jesus appears to his disciples. Verses 49-53 The ascension. Luke 24 and verse 1 reads.

Luke 24:1] Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

This would be the Sunday after the Passover, and the next day after the second sabbath. The morning of the fourth day. The “they” is given for Mary Magdalene and Mother Mary, the “certain others: are given for Solome the mother of James and John. Mother Mary and Solome were sisters making Jesus and John and James also cousins. We know that John the Baptist and Jesus were cousins, but good to know why Jesus would send his mother with John at the crucifixion. Now, before anyone accuses the bible of contradiction, there were four individuals that wrote four gospels. Each one a man appointed by God to write for us to study and learn the Word of God. Each one an individual with their own relationship with the Lord.

Luke 24:2] And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
[3] And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
[4] And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

These would be angels, God’s messengers.

Luke 24:5] And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
[6] He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

Let’s go to Luke 9 and verse 22 reads.

Luke 9:22] Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

Back to Luke 24 and verse 7 reads.

Luke 24:7] Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
[8] And they remembered his words,
[9] And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

This tells us that Jesus not only spoke to the twelve (at the time) but also these other disciples who were with him, being these women and other family members as well in Luke 9:22. But he also spoke just to the twelve about the same thing in Luke 18 and verse 31 reads.

Luke 18:31] Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
[32] For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:
[33] And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.

Back to Luke 24 and verse 10 reads.

Luke 24:10] It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
[11] And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

These women were some of their own mothers and believed them not? Doubt is a serious sin that can creep into a Christian. This seed is as one that fell upon the rock. Luke 8:6.

Luke 24:12] Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

I wonder if Peter gave thought to Luke 9:22 or Luke 18:31-33. Or even to the Mount of Transfiguration. Or even just two chapters ago Luke 22:61, when he and Jesus locked eyes after the cock crowed. Let’s go to Isaiah 53 and verse 10 reads.

Isa.53:10] Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
[11] He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
[12] Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Remember these verses, it helps explain a lot that is to come in Luke, back to Luke 24 and verse 13 reads.

Luke 24:13] And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

After the women told them the tomb was empty, and after Peter and John confirmed it, they decided to go for a bath? Emmaus means; warm springs, and it was about seven miles away from Jerusalem.

Luke 24:14] And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
[15] And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
[16] But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

The Lord closed their eyes to himself, that they would not recognize him. Now, Jesus will give them one bible story I wished I could have heard.

Luke 24:17] And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
[18] And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass therein these days?

Cleopas means; “Of a renowned father”. In John 19:25 we learn that Cleopas is the Greek for Cleophas (which means; My Exchanges) which is Hebrew. His wife is the other Mary Jesus’s mother’s sister, mother of James the less. The other one, we will learn in a minute, is named Simon, which means; A Hearing. Cleopas tells Jesus where have you been these last few days, they crucified the Christ.

Luke 24:19] And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
[20] And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
[21] But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

They didn’t understand the two advents. The first, as Jesus will explain, was for Salvation. The second, which they thought was then, was for the redemption of Israel, which would be the wrath of God or Vengeance. Jesus will set them straight and I hope open your eyes which are the eyes of his Elect today.

Luke 24:22] Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
[23] And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
[24] And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

This Simon is not Simon Peter, but does say he went with him to the sepulcher.

Luke 24:25] Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
[26] Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

Here is where all the disciples went wrong. First let’s go to Matthew 5 and verse 17 reads.

Mat.5:17] Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Jesus Christ is given his glory by what all the prophets and the law had prophesied of him, from Moses to John the Baptist. This is why when Peter cut the ear off of Malchus, Jesus said those who live by the sword must die by the sword. The Sword is the Word of God. But, then again, this is why the Lord blinded even his disciples to the Word. Back to Luke 24 and verse 27 reads.

Luke 24:27] And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

From Moses through the prophets it is written of the Son of God coming in the flesh (Isa.7:14) for Salvation. First let’s go to Deuteronomy 18 and verse 15 reads.

Deu.18:15] The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
[16] According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
[17] And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
[18] I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
[19] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
[20] But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

Speaking of false prophets or false teachers even until today.

Deu.18:21] And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
[22] When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Now let’s go to Isaiah 7 and verse 14 reads.

Isa.7:14] Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

And in Jeremiah 23 and verse 5 reads.

Jer.23:5] Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

Branch is uppercase for Jesus. And John the Baptist (The last of the prophets) told us in John 1 and verse 14 reads.

John 1:14] And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

And also, Philip in John 1 and verse 45 reads.

John 1:45] Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

From Moses through the prophets recorded the coming of the Messiah, the Christ. Back to Luke 24 and verse 28 reads.

Luke 24:28] And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
[29] But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

Knock and he will answer, ask and he will abode.

Luke 24:30] And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
[31] And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

The LORD can open eyes and he can close them. We can also partake of this ourselves, open every bible study with; Father open eyes and ears to your word, in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.

Luke 24:32] And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Notice that they knew that Jesus had opened their eyes to the scriptures.

Luke 24:33] And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

This proves that this Simon was not Simon Peter, because of the words; found the eleven. Notice there were other disciples besides the eleven.

Luke 24:34] Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
[35] And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

Even told them their eyes were not opened until after the breaking of bread. This will come in handy when the disciples come upon Jesus. John 21:13. When Jesus teaches them to fish on the right side of the boat.

Luke 24:36] And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
[37] But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

Could not they remember anything that was taught by Jesus.

Luke 24:38] And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

Showing us again that Jesus can read your mind.

Luke 24:39] Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

This is best explained in Psalms 16 and verse 8 reads.

Psa.16:8] I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
[9] Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
[10] For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
[11] Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

His flesh will never see corruption as all others will eventually. Even the two from the mount of transfiguration, Moses and Elijah will die in the streets as the two witnesses that Satan kills three days before the second advent. Back to Luke 24 and verse 40 reads.

Luke 24:40] And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
[41] And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

Let’s read that again. While they yet believed not for joy! Let’s go to 1John 1 and verse 1 reads.

1John 1:1] That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
[2] (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
[3] That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
[4] And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

The LORD opens eyes and closes them that his Word will come to pass. The twelve’s eyes were closed so that they would not interfere with the Word coming to pass, but opened to that of his name. And his name is The Word of God. Back to Luke 24 and verse 42 reads.

Luke 24:42] And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
[43] And he took it, and did eat before them.
[44] And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

Jesus would say in Mark 13:33 “behold I have foretold you all things.” Everything prophesied in the Old Testament Jesus would fulfill.

Luke 24:45] Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Our opening prayer; Father open eyes and ears to your Word. Written to all of God’s children. But, for God’s Elect in these end times let’s go to Revelation 2 and verse 7 reads.

Rev.2:7] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
[8] And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
[9] I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
[10] Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
[11] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

The LORD will open the eyes of his Elect in these end times. Back to Luke 24 and verse 46 reads.

Luke 24:46] And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

Jesus is reminding us to teach Christ crucified. With that, what we get is what is written is written and will happen exactly as it is written. Speaking of what is written in the law and the prophets. Study to show thyself approved.

Luke 24:47] And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Let’s go to Isaiah 2 and verse 3 reads.

Isa.2:3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Now let’s go to Psalms 22 and verse 27 reads.

Psa.22:27] All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.

Let’s go to Jeremiah 31 and verse 33 reads.

Jer.31:33] But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
[34] And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

And we find in Micah 4 and verse 2 reads.

Mic.4:2] And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Back to Luke 24 and verse 48 reads.

Luke 24:48] And ye are witnesses of these things.

Being witnesses of these things, spread the Word of God, spread that Salvation has come into the world.

Luke 24:49] And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Tarry means; Wait. Jesus has been with them for forty days now, he wants them to wait for ten more days until he sends the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to them. Let’s go to Isaiah 44 and verse 3 reads.

Isa.44:3] For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

We are talking about those twelve, after ten more days, the day of Pentecost, as well as for his Elect in the end times. This is the prophecy of the Holy Spirit speaking through the Elect when they are delivered up to Satan at the sixth trump. Elect, Watch and listen carefully. Let’s go to Joel 2 and verse 28 reads.

Joel 2:28] And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
[29] And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
[30] And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
[31] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
[32] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

Now let’s go to Acts 2 and verse 2 reads.

Acts 2:2] And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
[3] And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
[4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
[5] And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
[6] Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

This is the power of the Holy Spirit, when he speaks through man, everyone understands in the language in which he was born. No other spirit can accomplish this but the LORD’s. This is how we know it is the LORD’s Spirit, it is not babble.

Acts 2:7] And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
[8] And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

And this is what the Holy Spirit spoke, and verse 16 continues.

Acts 2:16] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
[17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
[18] And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
[19] And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
[20] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
[21] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
[22] Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
[23] Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
[24] Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Learn what a prophecy means. It always has to do with Jesus, what was, what is and what is to come. Back to Luke 24 and verse 50 reads.

Luke 24:50] And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

They went to the mount of Olives.

Luke 24:51] And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

Let’s get the whole conversation in Acts 1 and verse 6 reads.

Acts 1:6] When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

Asking if this was the second advent.

Acts 1:7] And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
[8] But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

He gives them the answer here. No, the second advent is not for them to know when, but they should keep working.

Acts 1:9] And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
[10] And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
[11] Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Jesus will return at the same place where he was taken up, at the Mount of Olives. Back to Luke 24 and verse 52 reads.

Luke 24:52] And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
[53] And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

Let’s finish the thought in Acts 2 and verse 12 reads.

Acts 2:12] Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.
[13] And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
[14] These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
[15] And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

A hundred and twenty people made up the church at that time. It would quickly grow after the day of Pentecost. That was a wonderful book by the Light Giver, Luke, and my pleasure in bringing it to you. Let’s go to his throne.
