We’ll finish this great chapter today, now we left off with Jesus talking to his twelve apostles, and he was telling them that they would sit with him in that kingdom and judge the twelve tribes of Israel. Remember when two of them argued who would sit on his right hand and who would sit on his left hand? I bet they felt a little foolish at this point. Now we continue and Luke 22 and verse 31 reads.
Luke 22:31] And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
[32] But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
When Gods elect are known, Satan will always come after you. He might come as one who puffs you up, or he might come at you with persecution. Just know that you have power over him and his angels. Now, Peter didn’t notice that Jesus said Simon (meaning hearing). So, his ears were not listening, and with that he must learn a hard lesson. Make sure you don’t make the same mistake.
Luke 22:33] And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
[34] And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
[35] And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
[36] Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
[37] For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
[38] And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
Jesus said to bring a scrip (to carry your food in), and buy a sword, why?
Because they will smite the shepherd and the sheep shall scatter. But, don’t overlook this “that is written”. Let’s go to Isaiah 53:11-12 and read.
Isa.53:11] He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
[12] Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Not that he had sinned, but that he would bare, and die for our sins. Back to Luke and verse 39 reads.
Luke 22:39] And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
[40] And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
[41] And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
[42] Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Jesus did not have a weak moment like I have heard some teachers preach. No, he was praying for the children because he knew that the cup of wrath was going to be poured out and it was going to hurt. But, notice Jesus gives an example for us that we always pray that the Fathers will be done, and not our own will. We now go to Isaiah 51 and read about this cup.
Isa.51:17] Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
It gets poured out.
Isa.51:18] There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
[19] These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
[20] Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God.
[21] Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:
[22] Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
This cup was taken out of the hands of Jesus and given unto the hand of our enemies, that they may drink of it.
Isa.51:23] But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.
Think of the Passover, the blood of the lamb on the doorpost that makes the death angel pass over us. Back to Luke and verse 43 reads.
Luke 22:43] And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
[44] And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Not that he was sweating blood but that it was like blood, thick.
Luke 22:45] And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
[46] And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
Caught sleeping on the job, as watchmen I hope you never sleep. Give Ezekiel 33 a read sometime. Sometimes we get caught up in this world when we should be watching, and the tempter comes and blindsides us. Back to Luke 22 and verse 47 reads.
Luke 22:47] And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
[48] But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
[49] When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
[50] And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
[51] And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
This man whose ear was cut off, his name is Malchus and would be the third that would accuse Peter before he heard the cock crow. I want to go to John 18:26-27 and read.
John 18:26] One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
[27] Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
Back to Luke 22 and verse 52 reads.
Luke 22:52] Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?
Why by night do you this? Because Jesus is Light and Satan is of Darkness. And the darkness comprehended it not. These are Kenites.
Luke 22:53] When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
This Jesus speaks directly to Satan.
Luke 22:54] Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.
[55] And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.
All the servants sat at this fire.
Luke 22:56] But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
[57] And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
[58] And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
[59] And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.
His clothes gave him away because he was dressed as a Galilean.
Luke 22:60] And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
[61] And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
[62] And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
This is truly sad. Peter had the courage to follow Jesus among the enemies. But when he opposed him and said I would die for you to our Lord (verse 33), the Lord let him know that his Word would happen exactly as it says. And more importantly, Jesus was to die for all of us. But the fact that Jesus turned and looked directly at him and their eyes made contact, this must surely be a disappointment I hope to never know.
Luke 22:63] And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.
[64] And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?
This angers me past my patience. The Lord reward them according to their works.
Luke 22:65] And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
[66] And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
[67] Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
[68] And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
[69] Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
Read Psalms 110 again.
Luke 22:70] Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
[71] And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
First things first, it is illegal for them to hold trial at night, now it was coming to about midnight when they said “no further witness”, false witnesses I will add. I have always had so much emotion in reading these chapters, I will try harder to hide that fact. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
