LUKE 19

In today’s lesson our titles are; Verses 1-10 Jesus and Zacchaeus. Verses 11-27 The parable of the ten pounds. Verses 28-40 Jesus enters Jerusalem. Verses 41-44 Jesus weeps over Jerusalem. Verses 45-48 The cleansing of the temple. Luke 19 and verse 1 reads.

Luke 19:1] And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem when he passed through Jericho without stopping within the city.

Luke 19:2] And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

We learned in the last chapter that these publicans are tax collectors. This Zacchaeus was chief of the publicans meaning he was boss over many, and he was rich. We also learned that many hated these publicans because they were made rich over ill-gotten gains. However, Zacchaeus we will find out was not that kind of man.

Luke 19:3] And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
[4] And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

He was a little man who could not see over the people. So, he went up a tree along the road that Jesus would be walking past. These trees would be planted along the road to give shade to the travelers, and were more likely an Egyptian fig tree that had fruit that grew on its trunk.

Luke 19:5] And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
[6] And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

Jesus knew him by name, and said he must abide at his house. Jesus must have known the good works of this man.

Luke 19:7] And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

Remember Isaiah 65:5, what God says of those that think they are holier than thou. They are likened unto smoke in his nostrils.

Luke 19:8] And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

He gives half of his possessions to the poor. This is why he was rich, he was rich with blessings. We have studied about those who received talents and heard Job well done my good and faithful servants. We’ll see another parable later in this chapter about ten pounds. Now, he said he restored fourfold to those who he had taken falsely from. Let’s look at the law, Exodus 22 and verse 1 reads.

Exo.22:1] If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

But I’m convinced that in this case Leviticus 6 applies, and verse 3 reads.

Lev.6:3] Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein:
[4] Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,
[5] Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.

He needed only to pay back what was taken falsely plus twenty percent more. Not fourfold which would be four hundred percent more. Nevertheless, this man who is a tax collector, gave to the poor and paid back any who was found cheated. And they were most likely cheated by the tax collectors under his authority. Back to Luke 19 and verse 9 reads.

Luke 19:9] And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

This day is Salvation, this being the first advent. Jesus came to the house of Jacob that’s all twelve tribes of Israel. Let’s go to Romans 4 and verse 16 reads.

Rom.4:16] Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Back to Luke 19 and verse 10 reads.

Luke 19:10] For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Remember the parable of the lost sheep, Jesus left the ninety and nine to find the one that was lost. This is the compassion of the LORD. Let’s go to Romans 5 and verse 8 reads.

Rom.5:8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
[9] Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Back to Luke 19 and verse 11 reads.

Luke 19:11] And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

They thought the kingdom of God would come. That is the second advent, the time of wrath and judgement. But this was the first advent, the time for Salvation and the Savior was here. Remember these parables are written for today’s Elect to hear and understand.

Luke 19:12] He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.

This nobleman is Jesus. He ascended after his resurrection to the Father and will return. Let’s go to Mark 13, Jesus is teaching us how it will be at his return, and verse 33 reads.

Mark 13:33] Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
[34] For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
[35] Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
[36] Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
[37] And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

In Daniel 7 he has a certain vision that troubled him, and verse 13 reads.

Dan.7:13] I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
[14] And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

This is speaking of the second advent, the seventh trump when all who are deceived are shamed to pray for mountains to fall on them. Back to Luke 19 and verse 13 reads.

Luke 19:13] And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.

Now this parable is for us to know that in these days, waiting for the second advent, we are to work and do his commandments. We plant the seeds, we feed his sheep, we continue working in the fields and are not taken. We are not deceived.

Luke 19:14] But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

These are the Kenites, and will not be saved, they have denied the Son of God. Let’s go to John 1 and verse 10 reads.

John 1:10] He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
[11] He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
[12] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Back to Luke 19 and verse 15 reads.

Luke 19:15] And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
[16] Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
[17] And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
[18] And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
[19] And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.

These two servants gained souls for the kingdom of God, and were granted what they could handle. It is my prayer that all of us hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Luke 19:20] And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
[21] For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
[22] And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:

Although this reminds us of the parable of the Sower, don’t let it take away from what was just said. Let’s go to king David, David just learned from a man that claimed to have killed king Saul and his son Jonathan thinking it would please David. 2Samuel 1 and verse 14 reads.

2Sam.1:14] And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?
[15] And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.
[16] And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’s anointed.

Touch not mine anointed, Yes Jesus is an austere man, but Christ means; The anointed One. He said feed my sheep, cast my seed. He says to broadcast his Word to his children. Back to Luke 19 and verse 23 reads.

Luke 19:23] Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?

He hid the Word of God from his brothers and sisters. Those that could have been saved if they had just heard the Word of God. This is what makes him a wicked servant.

Luke 19:24] And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
[25] (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
[26] For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

This may have been what troubled Daniel. We see this today in the world. Those that call themselves Christians, yet will not learn or teach the Word of God. But those that are a doer of God’s will, will be blessed. It has to do with the Elect in these end times, remember when his disciples asked him about the parables. Matthew 13 and verse 9 reads.

Mat.13:9] Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
[10] And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
[11] He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
[12] For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
[13] Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

Back to Luke 19 and verse 27 reads.

Luke 19:27] But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

But these Kenites who refused Salvation will die at the seventh trump. Let’s go to the parable of the Sower, his servants just learned that there were Tares (Kenites) sowed with the wheat. Matthew 13 and verse 28 reads.

Mat.13:28] He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
[29] But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
[30] Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Wait until the end times, then the reapers will reap with their sickles. Let’s go back to Matthew 13 and verse 37 reads.

Mat.13:37] He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
[38] The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
[39] The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
[40] As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
[41] The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
[42] And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
[43] Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

By ears to hear we know it is written for the Elect’s sake in these end times. Back to Luke 19 and verse 28 reads.

Luke 19:28] And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
[29] And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

We will be learning about the two advents here. I want you to notice that the Lord will have everything planned ahead for his own needs. What is written in the Word, comes to pass exactly as written, or in this case, exactly as he says.

Luke 19:30] Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.

This colt that was tied was never broken or ridden by man. He told them to untie the colt and bring the colt back with them.

Luke 19:31] And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
[32] And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
[33] And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
[34] And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
[35] And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.

This is the sign of the first advent. Both advents are given in Zechariah 9. The first advent is verse 9 and it reads.

Zec.9:9] Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Notice King is in uppercase for Jesus Christ. Now, the second advent is given in the next verse and it reads.

Zec.9:10] And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from river even to the ends of the earth.

That was both advents given in the great book of Zechariah. Back to Luke 19 and verse 36 reads.

Luke 19:36] And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
[37] And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

This mount of Olives will be where our LORD returns at the seventh trump (second advent).

Luke 19:38] Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

Prophecy fulfilled. Let’s go to Psalms 118 and verse 23 reads.

Psa.118:23] This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
[24] This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
[25] Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.

Save now, Hosanna. Our salvation is our prosperity of Life Everlasting.

Psa.118:26] Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
[27] God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.

The multitude said; Our King cometh in the name of the LORD. They knew the scriptures and that this prophecy had come to pass. Now, pay attention to verse 27, the King has come, and it is a sacrifice for the sins of the world, that would be our Lamb of God. Back to Luke 19 and verse 39 reads.

Luke 19:39] And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.

The disciples and the multitude knew the scriptures, these Kenites refused the Word of God. Should not they have known the scriptures also, were they not supposed to be priests in the synagogues? But Jesus had already called them hypocrites.

Luke 19:40] And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

Did not Satan tempt Jesus in the wilderness with the saying If you are hungry, turn these stones into bread? Let’s go to Habakkuk 2 and verse 9 reads.

Hab.2:9] Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
[10] Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul.
[11] For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

Back to Luke 19 and verse 41 reads.

Luke 19:41] And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

Jesus weeps over the city. Let’s go to Isaiah 53 and verse 3 reads.

Isa.53:3] He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Back to Luke 19 and verse 42 reads.

Luke 19:42] Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

Ears to hear and eyes to see. Jesus wept because Jerusalem was the city that all prophecies were written of and the Pharisees should have known of his coming. But Jesus also weeps for the second advent and verse 43 reads.

Luke 19:43] For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,

Now Jesus just brought up the second advent, there shall not one stone be atop another. And the world, with Jerusalem, shall go into captivity when the antichrist comes at the sixth trump, and the whole world shall be deceived.

Luke 19:44] And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

Lay thee means; demolish you. Let’s go to 1Kings 9 and verse 7 reads.

1Kings 9:7] Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:
[8] And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house?
[9] And they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.

See how Jesus is talking about the second advent? Read verse 9 more carefully. It said; Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil. This is at the sixth trump when Satan is standing in Jerusalem claiming to be Christ, but does lie. Let’s go to 2Thes.2 and verse 3 reads.

2Thes.2:3] Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
[4] Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

But he is not God, he is the antichrist. Remember these scribes and Pharisees should have known the Word of God. Let’s go to Jeremiah 8 and verse 8 reads.

Jer.8;8] How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
[9] The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?
[10] Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
[11] For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
[12] Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

Those that are not ashamed are not the ones that pray for mountains to fall on them, but are the Kenites who refuse the Word of God. Back to Luke 19 and verse 45 reads.

Luke 19:45] And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;

It was prophesied that he would come to the temple. Let’s go to Malachi 3 and verse 1 reads.

Mal.3:1] Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to this temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
[2] But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:

But it is not lawful for anyone to buy or sell in the temple of God. But the Pharisees were making profit from those that would come to the temple. Instead of bringing the best of their flocks, they would for pennies buy doves for an offering. This reminds me of Simon the sorcerer who thought he could buy the blessings of the Holy Spirit, but Peter had this to say to him in Acts 8 and verse 20 reads.

Acts 8:20] But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
[21] Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
[22] Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

Back to Luke 19 and verse 46 reads.

Luke 19:46] Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Jesus is quoting Isaiah 56 and verse 7 reads.

Isa.56:7] Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

Not for pennies for a dove, but for their true sacrifices from their flocks.

Isa.56:8] The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.
[9] All ye beasts of the field, come to devour, yea, all ye beasts in the forest.
[10] His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.
[11] Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.
[12] Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.

Always go back and read what Jesus quotes for a better understanding. He gives us much more when we read his Word. Now, let’s go to Jeremiah 7 and verse 10 reads.

Jer.7:10] And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
[11] Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

The LORD has seen it before he ever went into the temple. Back to Luke 19 and verse 47 reads.

Luke 19:47] And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
[48] And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

This proves that the Pharisees and scribes were indeed Kenites. They have murder in their hearts for the Son of God. Can you see how they refused the Word of God? Let’s go to his throne.

Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
