In our study today, verses 1-15 Jesus feeds five thousand. Verses 16-21 Jesus walks on the water. Verses 22-30 Jesus teaches in Capernaum. Verses 31-65 I Am the Bread of Life. Verses 66-71 Peter’s confession. With that in mind, John 6 and verse 1 reads.
John 6:1] After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
[2] And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
Jesus became known for his miracles in all of Judea and the surrounding areas.
John 6:3] And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
[4] And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
Jesus separates his disciples from the multitude to talk with them about the Passover.
John 6:5] When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
[6] And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
Study to show thyself approved. In Matthew 4:3, Satan tempted Jesus by saying “If you be the Son of God, turn these stones into bread”. Jesus answered him in Mat.4:4 by saying “It is written, (Due.8:3) Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Which in Rev.1:16 is that two-edged sword.
John 6:7] Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
Now in John 1 we learned that Jesus is the Word of God. We also know that his body is the Bread of Life, our Daily Bread.
John 6:8] One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,
[9] There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
[10] And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
About five thousand men, including their families, this could be as many as 15,000-20,000 people. Let’s not overlook they sat them down in order, always have order when the Word of God is going to be taught. 5 in numerical order is Grace.
John 6:11] And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
Notice here that Jesus did not feed the five thousand, but rather his disciples fed them. Today, it is our job to feed the hungry the Word of God.
John 6:12] When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
[13] Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
Many people simply just don’t understand what is being said here. First, five is grace. Second barley is poor man’s bread. But the fact that they had to take it up represents it was false doctrine. Let’s go to Matthew 16 and verse 6 reads.
Mat.16:6] Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
[7] And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.
[8] Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?
[9] Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
They took up 12 baskets.
Mat.16:10] Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
Then they took up, away, 7 baskets. Now, pay attention this is why we came here.
Mat.16:11] How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
[12] Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
It was the false doctrine, traditions of men, that needed to be taken away so that they could teach the True Word of God. not all who received a fish sandwich received the Truth of God’s Word. Back to John 6 and verse 14 reads.
John 6:14] Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
A very important proclamation was made here. Let’s go to Deuteronomy 18 and verse 15 reads.
Due.18:15] The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
The problem, as we will see in the next verse, is they think this is the second advent. Back to John 6 and verse 15 reads.
John 18:15] When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
There are two advents, the first which is now, is for Salvation. The second, Jesus returns as KING of KINGS and LORD of LORDS. Let’s go back to Deuteronomy 18 and read now from verse 15 to the end of the subject. Verse 15 reads.
Due.18:15] The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
[16] According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
Horeb is H2722 and means; Desert. 1. another name for Mount Sinai from which God gave the law to Moses and the Israelites.
Deu.18:17] And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
[18] I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
This being Jesus as Savior for the first advent.
Deu.18:19] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
The Word of God is written for our admonition. He will require it of any who do not repent. Now, why we came here?
Deu.18:20] But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
The false doctrine of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, or any of the false teachers in our churches today. It is written for their admonition as well. Back to John 6 and verse 16 reads.
John 6:16] And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
[17] And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
They left without Jesus, now dark, they hadn’t seen Jesus as of yet.
John 6:18] And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
Without Jesus in the boat with them is like us today without Jesus in our lives. Follow this analogy.
John 6:19] So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
[20] But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
We get a better and more complete story from Matthew in Mat.14 and verse 24 reads.
Mat.14:24] But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
[25] And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
The fourth watch is from 3am-6am.
Mat.14:26] And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
[27] But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
[28] And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
[29] And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
Peter walked on the water also, so long as he kept his eyes on the LORD he did well.
Mat.14:30] But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
He took his eyes off the LORD.
Mat.14:31] And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
[32] And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
[33] Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Proclaimed that Jesus was the Son of God. Notice that the wind and the sea became calm as soon as Jesus entered into the boat. This is our Sabbath, our Rest in Jesus Christ. Back to John 6 and verse 21 reads.
John 6:21] Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
[22] The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
[23] (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
[24] When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
The people who ate of the fish sandwiches couldn’t find Jesus, though they knew he did not leave with his disciples in the ship they took. Took themselves ships to the other side, and looked for Jesus.
John 6:25] And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
Now that they had found him, Jesus has something to say to them.
John 6:26] Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
He says “Truly, truly”, it was not because of the miracles, but because of the fish sandwiches you were filled. In other words, their bellies were filled but not their spirits.
John 6:27] Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Remember the woman at the well? Let’s go to John 4 and verse 13 reads.
John 4:13] Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
[14] But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Don’t overlook “God the Father sealed”, let’s go to Rev.7 and verse 3 reads.
Rev.7:3] Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
This is what the Word of God does for his Elect, He seals his Truth in our minds. Back to John 6 and verse 28 reads.
John 6:28] Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
Read and believe the scriptures. This makes me think of the Parable of the Sower. The seed that landed on good ground gave much fruit. Now pay attention, what is going to be taught by Jesus will contain both Works and Faith and both come from the Bread of Life.
John 6:29] Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
They had asked “That we might work the works of God.” And Jesus begins with “This is the Work, believe on the Son of God.” Let’s learn a little more about these Works, let’s go to James 2 and verse 20 reads.
James 2:20] But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
[21] Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
This is important because Jesus would become that Lamb of God.
James 2:22] Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
[23] And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
[24] Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Now let’s go to the first epistle of John, 1John 3 and verse 18 reads.
1John 3:18] My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
Here the word “deed” is work.
1John 3:19] And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
[20] For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
[21] Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
[22] And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
We must not only know his Word, but we must be a doer of his Word.
1John 3:23] And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
[24] And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
Now let’s go to Acts 10 and verse 35 reads.
Acts 10:35] But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
Even unto the gentiles are works needed to prove your faith. Let’s go to Revelation 14 and verse 13 reads.
Rev.14:13] And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Our Works are the only thing that follows us to heaven. Let’s not lose perspective here, those who followed Jesus to the other side of the sea asked in verse 28; Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? and Jesus answered in John 6:29] Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. Believe on him whom he sent, Jesus is the Living Word, he is the Word of God. Back to John 6 and verse 30 reads.
John 6:30] They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
[31] Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
Written in Exodus 16 and verse 4 reads.
Exo.16:4] Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.
They were right in a way, but it was not from Moses it came from God. Let’s go to Nehemiah 9 and verse 15 reads.
Neh.9:15] And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.
I want you to find time for my study called Our Daily Bread, it will enlighten you further on this study in John 6. Let’s go to Psalms 78 and verse 22 reads.
Psa.78:22] Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
[23] Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
[24] And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
[25] Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.
It was because they didn’t believe that they died in the wilderness, the LORD had promised them a land filled with milk and honey. This is also being taught to those who followed Jesus to the other side of the Sea. Back to John 6 and verse 32 reads.
John 6:32] Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
This word “Bread” comes from Exodus 16 and is H3399 from H3898 which is lâcham pronounced law-kham’. And means; 1. to fight, do battle, make war. Making my study Our Daily Bread a must read. Back to John 6 and verse 33 reads.
John 6:33] For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
Jesus himself was the bread given from heaven. It was the Word of God that was given. But, those in the desert did not believe, and they died in the desert not seeing the promised land. I did a study in Topical Teaching titled Our Daily Bread, so important we put the title in our logo on the Home page. Notice verse 33, the bread of God is HE which cometh down from heaven. That HE is Jesus Christ, Savior. (John 1:14).
John 6:34] Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
[35] And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
A great example for us in these end times. Let’s go to Amos 8 and verse 11 reads.
Amos 8:11] Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
Now let’s go to 1 Corinthians 10 and verse 11 reads.
1Cor.10:11] Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Always examples for those of us here in these end times. Talking about from Moses and those in the wilderness to those that Jesus is talking to here in John 6. Back to John 6 and verse 36 reads.
John 6:36] But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
Oh no, they don’t believe either. That fish sandwich confused them. They have seen the Word of God, the Son of God before their very eyes and did not believe. They asked for a sign, typical of the tribe of Judah. Let’s go to 1Cor.1 and verse 22 reads.
1Cor.1:22] For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
[23] But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
Jesus is that stumbling block for the Jews, because the Kenites are among them and will be the ones that crucify our Lord.
1Cor.1:24] But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
There will be twelve thousand Elect from each of the tribes of Israel, this includes the tribe of Judah. And so many, they cannot be counted, of the gentiles. Now, we have been reading how these followed Jesus from the other side of the sea. Where did they find him, we will read in a minute they followed him into a synagogue. And what did we read about the levin from the Pharisees and the Sadducees? Keep this in mind as we continue in John 6 and verse 37 reads.
John 6:37] All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
Let’s go ahead to John 10 and verse 26 reads.
John 10:26] But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
[27] My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
[28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
[29] My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
And for the Elect in the end times never forget Matthew 24 and verse 23 reads.
Mat.24:23] Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
[24] For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
[25] Behold, I have told you before.
And in 1John 2 and verse 18 reads.
1John 2:18] Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
[19] They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
[20] But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
[21] I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
Behold Jesus has foretold us all things. Have you read? Back to John 6 and verse 38 reads.
John 6:38] For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
Jesus spoke of this in John 4 and verse 34 reads.
John 4:34] Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
And the last words Jesus spoke in the flesh from on the cross was written in John 19 and verse 30 reads.
John 19:30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Back to John 6 and verse 39 reads.
John 6:39] And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
Let’s go back to John 10 and verse 27 reads.
John 10:27] My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
[28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
The will of the Father is Salvation for whosoever believes. Back to John 6 and verse 40 reads.
John 6:40] And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
[41] The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
Remember that word Bread is H3898, to make war. This is the war of Principalities from on high. Against the devil, that is Satan.
John 6:42] And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
Written for those who have ears to hear. They obviously did not have ears to hear.
John 6:43] Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
[44] No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Written in Philippians 1 and verse 29 reads.
Phi.1:29] For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
Raised up in spirit at the last day in the flesh. Back to John 6 and verse 45 reads.
John 6:45] It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
Jesus just said it is written in the prophets. All this can be read in the prophet Isaiah 53. But we know this, that all the prophets lead us to Jesus Christ.
John 6:46] Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
[47] Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
[48] I am that bread of life.
[49] Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
[50] This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
[51] I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
It is in his many names, Savior, Redeemer, The Word of God, The Living Bread, and let’s not overlook his Holy name I Am. This is our gospel armor, the Living Word of God. These “Jews” won’t understand, many being the Kenites or Pharisees and Sadducees which are in the synagogue. They are false prophets.
John 6:52] The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
[53] Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Catch that! Unless you partake of the sacraments you have no life in you. These Pharisees and Sadducees are in the synagogue and can’t even think spiritually. Let’s go to the 2nd Epistle of John and verse 7 reads.
2John 7] For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
Do not be deceived. Back to John 6 and verse 54 reads.
John 6:54] Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
[55] For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
[56] He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
He would explain further in John 14 about how the Father and the Son dwelleth in us. But let’s go to the First Epistle of John 3 and verse 24 reads.
1John 3:24] And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
This is the Holy Spirit, The Comforter. Let’s now go to 1John 4 and verse 13 reads.
1John 4:13] Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
[14] And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
[15] Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
[16] And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
Eat the flesh of Jesus Christ, read and study the Word of God. It is that simple. Back to John 6 and verse 57 reads.
John 6:57] As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
After knowing that Bread from verse 32 is taken from Exo.16 and is H3399 from H3898 which is lâcham pronounced law-kham’. And means; 1. to fight, do battle, make war. We can now understand the Sword of the LORD from Rev.1:16 that two-edged sword that comes out of the mouth, being the Word of God is our gospel armor. This is not meant for them in that synagogue, but for you and me in these last days. But for them this was written, that the Word became flesh and walked among them in those days. John 1:14.
John 6:58] This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
[59] These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
They did not have ears to hear, but written for us today.
John 6:60] Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
[61] When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
[62] What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
[63] It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Bad enough the Pharisees could not understand, but even his disciples were not getting it. But does let them know, it is the spirit that makes alive (Quickeneth) for the flesh is corruptible. 1Cor.15:50-55.
John 6:64] But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
He knew many of the disciples who followed him would not believe. These disciples were not of the twelve.
John 6:65] And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
Only the Father can open or close the eyes and ears of his children.
John 6:66] From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
[67] Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
[68] Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
[69] And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
This confession made by Peter is the statement that all must make to have eternal life.
John 6:70] Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
[71] He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.
Don’t overlook that all were chosen for their positions, sadly for Judas he was chosen to be the betrayer. Another great chapter in John, let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
