No one should come between you and God

JOHN 2

Another great chapter so let’s get right into it and John 2 verse 1 reads.

John 2:1] And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
[2] And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

This would be three days after ch.1:43. Mary was kind of in charge, maybe on the bridegroom’s side. I say this because it was her, that the problem was brought to.

John 2:3] And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
[4] Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

Jesus would never disrespect his mother, he wasn’t being harsh to her, but rather was speaking to her that he did not think it was time to make himself known. Mamma thought differently. She was a wise woman.

John 2:5] His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
[6] And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

This would be about 27 gallons in today’s measures. This must have been a very big wedding.

John 2:7] Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
[8] And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
[9] When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
[10] And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
[11] This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

This was the first miracle Christ performed, many pastors can’t imagine Jesus turning water into wine, they say it was grape juice. Jesus made wine, in the Greek it is called Yah-yun, and it means to become or make drunk. When Jesus does something, he does it better than any man could, I’m sure it was the best wine, and the most intoxicating. Because what the man said about it being the best.

John 2:12] After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.
[13] And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

This would be his first Passover in Jerusalem since his ministries began.

John 2:14] And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
[15] And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;
[16] And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.

How many churches today do you see selling books and such in their foyer’s today. Don’t tell me it’s different, it’s not. Jesus became very angry, so angry he turned the tables and made a whip and chased them out of the temple.

John 2:17] And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

It is written, let’s go and find out where, Psalms 69 and it reads.

Psa.69:9] For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Righteous indignation is when the Lord’s righteousness has been perverted and we stand up and defend his honor. Back to John and verse 18 reads.

John 2:18] Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

What they asked him was give us sign. And Jesus gives them their only sign, the sign of Jonah’s. Jonah was in the belly of the fish 3 days and Jesus would be in the tomb for 3 days.

John 2:19] Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
[20] Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
[21] But he spake of the temple of his body.

Jesus said if you destroy this temple, I would raise it up in three days. At his trial they would have a false witness testify that Jesus said he would be the one that tares it down, a lie.

John 2:22] When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

Funny how they remember after he is risen, but not before Jesus showed himself to them.

John 2:23] Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

At Passover people from all over the world made their pilgrimage to Jerusalem. They spoke all languages and of course they were not only of the tribe of Judah, but even the house of Israel. There are twelve tribes in all.

John 2:24] But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
[25] And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

Jesus was with God in the beginning and had created man. In Gen.6:5 it is written.

Gen.6:5] And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

God was upset because the fallen angels had seduced man and woman so easily. The flesh is hard but this is why we must control flesh and mind the spirit. Let’s go to his throne.

Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
