Today’s study in John 19 is divided into many titles, verses 1-15 they shout “Crucify Him”. Verses 16-30 The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Verses 31-37 They pierce our Lord. Verses 38-42 The burial of Jesus. Continuing from chapter 18, John 19 and verse 1 reads.

John 19:1] Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 20 and verse 17 reads.

Mat.20:17] And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
[18] Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
[19] And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Jesus knew he would be scourged and told them he was going to be crucified. Will his disciples remember he also told them he would rise again on the third day? Back to John 19 and verse 2 reads.

John 19:2] And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
[3] And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

Prophesied in Isaiah 50 and verse 6 reads.

Isa.50:6] I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Back to John 19 and verse 4 reads.

John 19:4] Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

Showing us here Pilate had him scourged to try and bring sympathy for Jesus from them, it won’t work. But when says; That you may know that I find no fault in him. He is saying in the Greek; That you realize I find no crime in him. This is also prophesied in Isaiah 53 and verse 9 reads.

Isa.53:9] And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

We find his reason in 1Peter 2 and verse 22 reads.

1Pet.2:22] Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
[23] Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
[24] Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Back to John 19 and verse 5 reads.

John 19:5] Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
[6] When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

The word fault is crime. Pilate is speaking to Kenites, offsprings of Cain the first murderer, they are the serpent’s seed. Let’s go to Acts 3 and verse 13 reads.

Acts 3:13] The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.
[14] But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;

Speaking here of Barabbas who killed over 400 people. Back to John 19 and verse 7 reads.

John 19:7] The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Isa.7:14 and Mat.1:22-23, Emmanuel meaning; God with us. But let’s not overlook what was said, We have a law, that is an interesting statement. They are quoting Leviticus 24 verse 16 but have overlooked themselves in verse 17. Let’s go to Leviticus 24 and verse 16 reads.

Lev.24:16] And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death.
[17] And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.

Funny how they chose Barabbas, a murderer, over Jesus. The reason is in his name, Barabbas means; son of his father. Cain was the first murderer, that man was a Kenite and so are these that shout “Crucify Him”. So, we have the Son of God, Jesus. and we have son of his father, son of the serpent. In Genesis 3 we are given the first prophecy in God’s Word. and verse 15 reads.

Gen.3:15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Back to John 19 and verse 8 reads.

John 19:8] When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

Pilate was warned by his wife not to have anything to do with the judgement of Jesus because of a dream. Mat.27:19.

John 19:9] And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

Fulfilling prophecy in Isaiah 53 and verse 7 reads.

Isa.53:7] He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

Back to John 19 and verse 10 reads.

John 19:10] Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
[11] Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Pilate marveled at Jesus’s stature, standing before Jesus he must have felt his Holy Spirit. Let’s go to Romans 13 and verse 1 reads.

Rom.13:1] Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

God ordains all those who are in power over the people of the earth. This does not mean all in power are righteous, but that God has allowed it. Back to John 19 and verse 12 reads.

John 19:12] And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

This is the only reason Pilate allowed Jesus to be crucified. Because if it got back to Caesar that someone else claimed to be king and was not crucified, then Pilate would have been beheaded.

John 19:13] When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Gabbatha G1042 and means; elevated or platform. The place for judgement in Jerusalem. Let’s go to Isaiah 53 and verse 11 reads.

Isa.53:11] He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
[12] Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

What is written will happen exactly as it is written. Back to John 19 and verse 14 reads.

John 19:14] And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

This is the fourteenth day of Abib, when the Passover lamb was to be killed. Now, we have the sixth hour and this needs a little help. The sixth hour for the Hebrews would be noon, but we know that they crucified Jesus at 9 am. This is the sixth hour of Roman time making it 6 am. Proving we had trial all the night which is against Hebrew law, but not against Roman law.

John 19:15] But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priest answered, We have no king but Caesar.

The chief priest should know Melchizedek, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. But this chief priest from the house of the LORD just denied the LORD before a gentile. Knowing this was the only way to have Pilate crucify Jesus, when he said that he found no fault in him. Let’s go to Genesis 49, here we have a star in your bible meaning it is speaking of Jesus Christ, verse 10 reads.

Gen.49:10] The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Shiloh H7886 and means; tranquility, an epithet of the Messiah. And in Numbers 24 and verse 17 reads.

Num.24:17] I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

You would think a chief priest from the house of the LORD would know the law of Moses. Back to John 19 and verse 16 reads.

John 19:16] Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
[17] And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

Called the place of a skull because it looked like a skull.

John 19:18] Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

Fulfilling the prophecy of “he made his grave with the wicked” in Isaiah 53 and verse 9 reads.

Isa.53:9] And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Back to John 19 and verse 19 reads.

John 19:19] And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
[20] This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

Written in all the common languages of the area. Called INRI by some.

John 19:21] Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
[22] Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

The chief priest argues with Pilate what should have been written, but Pilate knows that they lied. Remember Jesus never said a word claiming to be King. And Pilate now shows he has no patience with the chief priest.

John 19:23] Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

This coat that belonged to Jesus, was a priestly garment and had great value.

John 19:24] They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

Prophesied in Psalms 22 and verse 18 reads.

Psa.22:18] They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

Back to John 19 and verse 25 reads.

John 19:25] Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

Here we have the true name of the father of John and James, which was called Zebedee. Cleophas means; exchanges. Perhaps of the priest line. Zebedee means; thunder. And I bet his voice did thunder. But here we realize that James and John are also cousins to Jesus and that their mother was also a daughter of Aaron, the priest line.

John 19:26] When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

John is speaking of himself. He also used this phrase Whom he, being Jesus, loved in John 13:23.

John 19:27] Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

John took Jesus’s mother Mary into his home because the sisters could comfort one another. We know that Jesus’s other brothers would be out doing the works of the LORD. This verse also shows that though you smite the shepherd and the sheep shall scatter, John didn’t go far.

John 19:28] After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Fulfilling Psalms 69 and verse 21 reads.

Psa.69:21] They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
[22] Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

Back to John 19 and verse 29 reads.

John 19:29] Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
[30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Fulfilling Psa.69:21 also. Now it is written in the other gospels “My God, My God why hast thou forsaken me” bringing up verse 1 of Psalms 22. Here is where we go to Psalms 22 because I believe Jesus quoted the entire Psalm and here in John it will be proven. We will read the entire Psalm of David but before we do, know that it was written a thousand years before the crucifixion. Psa.22 and verse 1 reads.

Psa.22:1] My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

Matthew 27:46, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Jesus was quoting Psalms 22 and we will see he quoted all of it in a minute.

Psa.22:2] O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
[3] But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
[4] Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
[5] They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.

Written in Isa.49 and verse 23 reads.

Isa.49:23] And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

Back to Psalms 22 and verse 6 reads.

Psa.22:6] But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

Prophesied also in Isa.53 and verse 3 reads.

Isa.53:3] He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Back to Psalms 22 and verse 7 reads.

Psa.22:7] All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head saying,

Let’s go to Matthew 27 and verse 39 reads.

Mat.27:39] And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

Back to Psalms 22 and verse 8 reads.

Psa.22:8] He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

Fulfilled in Matthew 27 and verse 43 reads.

Mat.27:43] He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

Back to Psalms 22 and verse 9 reads.

Psa.22:9] But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
[10] I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.

Let’s go back to Isaiah, first Isa.46 and verse 3 reads.

Isa.46:3] Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb:

Now let’s go to Isa.49 and verse 1 reads.

Isa.49:1] Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

Back to Psalms 22 and verse 11 reads.

Psa.22:11] Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
[12] Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
[13] They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
[14] I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

His bones are pulled from their sockets as he hangs on the cross. Again, let’s go back to Isaiah 53 and verse 5 reads.

Isa.53:5] But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Back to Psalms 22 and verse 15 reads.

Psa.22:15] My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
[16] For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

Pierced his hands and feet when they nailed him to the cross. Fulfilling the first prophecy in God’s Word from Gen.3:15 and it reads.

Gen.3:15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Back to Psalms 22 and verse 17 reads.

Psa.22:17] I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
[18] They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

Prophecy fulfilled in John 19:24.

Psa.22:19] But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
[20] Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

This word darling should have been translated soul.

Psa.22:21] Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

Unicorns should have been translated as wild ox, or bulls of Bashan. Properly translated in verse 12 above.

Psa.22:22] I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
[23] Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
[24] For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

You better believe the Father heard the Son, Jesus is teaching this from the cross. We will get to that in a minute.

Psa.22:25] My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
[26] The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.

The meek shall inherit the earth. Mat.5:5.

Psa.22:27] All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
[28] For the kingdom is the LORD’s: and he is the governor among the nations.
[29] All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
[30] A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.

This generation is the generation of the fig tree, that would be today. God’s Elect will serve him.

Psa.22:31] They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

The “He hath done this” is equivalent to “It is finished” as written in John 19 verse 30 above. This is the reason I believe Jesus spoke the whole prophecy of Psalms 22 from the cross. Back to John 19 and verse 31 reads.

John 19:31] The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Let’s go to Exodus for this High Day. Exo.12 and verse 16 reads.

Exo.12:16] And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.

Now let’s go to 1Corinthians 5 and verse 7 reads.

1Cor.5:7] Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Christ became our Passover Lamb. About them breaking his legs, we’ll get to it in a minute. Back to John 19 and verse 32 reads.

John 19:32] Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
[33] But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

Breaking the legs of someone being crucified would bring on death quicker. But it was not needed for Jesus because he gave up the Spirit already. But Jesus was the Passover Lamb, it was not legal for them to break any bones of the Passover sacrifice. Let’s go back to Exodus 12 and verse 46 reads.

Exo.12:46] In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.

Jesus being the sacrifice once and for all time, would not have a bone broken. Back to John 19 and verse 34 reads.

John 19:34] But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

Let’s go to the first epistle of John 5 and verse 6 reads.

1John 5:6] This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
[7] For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
[8] And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Back to John 19 and verse 35 reads.

John 19:35] And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

John also tells this in chapter 20 and verse 30 reads.

John 20:30] And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
[31] But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Back to John 19 and verse 36 reads.

John 19:36] For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

That it is written in the scriptures concerning Jesus, let’s go to Psalms 34 and verse 20 reads.

Psa.34:20] He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

Jesus became our Passover, not our easter. 1Cor.5:7. But let’s go to Numbers 9 and verse 11 reads.

Num.9:11] The fourteenth day of the second month at even they shall keep it, and eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
[12] They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.

Back to John 19 and verse 37 reads.

John 19:37] And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

Let’s first go back to Psa.22 and verse 16 reads.

Psa.22:16] For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
[17] I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

Also prophesied in Zechariah 12 and verse 10 reads.

Zec.12:10] And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

And my favorite is in Revelation 1 and verse 7 reads.

Rev.1:7] Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

And I say come LORD Jesus come. Back to John 19 and verse 38 reads.

John 19:38] And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

Joseph of Arimathaea was Jesus’s mother Mary’s uncle. He was a very rich man. He owned tin mines in today’s England. There is a book by E. Raymond Capp, a historian and archeologist, titled The Traditions of Glastonbury. His book proves without a doubt that Jesus was with his uncle Joseph in England from the ages of 12-30. Here in John, we find he is the kinsman redeemer. It will be in his tomb that Jesus would be laid to rest completing the prophecy of Isaiah which said “with the rich in his death”. Isa.53:9.

John 19:39] And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

Showing that Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus were friends. This myrrh and aloes are very expensive, Nicodemus was not only rich, but a disciple of Jesus also.

John 19:40] Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
[41] Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
[42] There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

This would conclude the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. A very hard study for me emotionally. I hope we covered enough for you to realize that prophecy and scripture must come to pass exactly as it is written. Great chapter, let’s go to his throne.

Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
