Our titles for today’s study are; Verses 1-11 Mary anoints Jesus for his crucifixion. Verses 12-19 Jesus enters Jerusalem. Verses 20-50 We would see Jesus. John 12 and verse 1 reads.
John 12:1] Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
Being six days before Passover takes us to the ninth day of Abib, of the first month. Dr. E.W. Bullinger has done a must read in his Companion Bible for these last six days in Appendix 156. I highly recommend this study for a very comprehensive understanding. Back to John 12 and verse 2 reads.
John 12:2] There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
The women served the men. Remember Martha, Mary and Lazarus are siblings.
John 12:3] Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Not to be confused with the woman of Luke 7 who washed his feet with her tears. But that we understand what is happening here, we must look at Jesus’ name. Jesus G2424 Iēsous pronounced ee-ay-sooce’, is taken from H3091 Yᵉhôwshûwaʻ pronounced yeh-ho-shoo’-ah. 1. Jesus, the Son of God, the Saviour of mankind, God incarnate. Yahoveh’s Savior. Christ G5547 Christos, and means; Anointed. Anointed that is the Messiah an epithet of Jesus. 1 to rub with anointing oil. Jesus Christ Yah’s Savior, the Anointed One. As Christians (Christ men) we are to anoint one another for healing. Back to John 12 and verse 4 reads.
John 12:4] Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him,
[5] Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
In Matthew 26:6-13 we had a woman who anointed the head of Jesus at Simon the leper’s house. That was not Mary who did it because we see here that Mary anointed his feet. But we see here that Judas’s fathers name was Simon also. I feel these are two different occasions, but you can read for yourself and make your own mind up.
John 12:6] This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
In Matthew 26:6-13 all the disciples complained, here just Judas complains. Judas carried the money bag for Jesus and his disciples. Called a thief, but remember it was Jesus who chose him. Let’s go ahead to John 13 and verse 27 reads.
John 13:27] And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
[28] Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
[29] For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
Back to John 12 and verse 7 reads.
John 12:7] Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
[8] For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
Look deeper into what was said, we will always have the poor. The poor in spirit are the sheep we need to feed the Word of God to. Let’s go to Revelation 2 and verse 9 reads.
Rev.2:9] I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
You might be poor in poverty, but you are rich in the Word of God. Let’s go to Deuteronomy 15 and verse 10 reads.
Deu.15:10] Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
[11] For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.
Don’t tell me Jesus was a socialist, it is not the job of the government, but for you and me to take care of the poor. Back to John 12 and verse 9 reads.
John 12:9] Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
After four days, he was raised from the dead. That was to show that Jesus would indeed conquer Death, that is the Devil. Hebrews 2:14. But, let’s back up to John 11 and verse 43 reads.
John 11:43] And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
[44] And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
[45] Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
[46] But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
Those that saw the miracle believed, but some went immediately to the Pharisees. Back to John 12 and verse 10 reads.
John 12:10] But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;
[11] Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
Now Lazarus was our example that the church would have new leaders, one’s that would teach truth and not traditions of men. For this reason, they wanted to kill Lazarus also. Remember these are Kenites among the Jews. Pay attention to the timeline, we now go into the fifth day before Passover.
John 12:12] On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
[13] Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna is a Hebrew word, H3467 and means; Save now. Written a thousand years before by king David in Psalms 118 and verse 24 reads.
Psa.118:24] This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
[25] Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
Save now, Hosanna. Send now, Jesus.
Psa.118:26] Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
[27] God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.
Jesus came as the Lamb of God and was crucified for Salvation to the world. Back to John 12 and verse 14 reads.
John 12:14] And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
[15] Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.
Jesus said it was written, and we find it written in Zechariah 9 and verse 9 reads.
Zec.9:9] Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
In Zechariah 9 we have both advents, the first is in verse 9, which we just read, and the second is in verse 10. Let’s go to Isaiah 40 and verse 9 reads.
Isa.40:9] O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
In both Zechariah 9:9-10 and Isaiah 40:9-10 we have both advents. Back to John 12 and verse 16 reads.
John 12:16] These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
This pertains to their eyes being opened after his resurrection.
John 12:17] The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
Those that were there for the sisters and comforted them, they were witnesses and told them that came, that it was true, he was dead and now he lives.
John 12:18] For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
[19] The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
The Kenites know they are losing people out of their synagogues to Jesus. The synagogues were supposed to be the house of the LORD but they had made it a den of thieves. This was why Jesus was so angry and overturned the tables. But, notice Jesus would go into the synagogues to teach.
John 12:20] And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
Here we have certain Greeks who came to worship at the feast. Meaning they were of the twelve tribes but resided in Greece. Let’s go to Exodus 12 and verse 14 reads.
Deu.12:14] And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
Israel is all twelve tribes and Judah is but one of the twelve. They would come from all over the world to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. In Acts Philip was sent by God to seek out another man who was an Israelite, Acts 8 and verse 26 reads.
Acts 8:26] And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
[27] And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
[28] Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
One, he could read Isaiah the prophet, written in Hebrew. Two, even though he was an eunuch, he was blessed beyond measure by the LORD for his belief. Three, he went to Jerusalem to worship, making him an Israelite. Back to John 12 and verse 21 reads.
John 12:21] The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
[22] Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
[23] And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
Did not say if Jesus spoke with these that came from Greece or not, we can only assume.
John 12:24] Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
This is awesome that Jesus brings into a simple understanding of the corn. When you plant corn, the kernel must die (rot) in the ground. Then, and only then can it bring forth the plant. The plant therefore will bring more corn, and there you have much more corn from one kernel. This is how we plant seeds, the word of God. Jesus must die for all to have salvation. Heb.2:14 reads.
Heb.2:14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
That was the parable of the resurrection. Back to John 12 and verse 25 reads.
John 12:25] He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
We are not of this world, but must come through this world. John wrote of this also in 1John 2 and verse 15 reads.
1John 2:15] Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
[16] For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
[17] And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Back to John 12 and verse 26 reads.
John 12:26] If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
Many of us have in our house; As for me and my house we shall serve the LORD. Let’s go to Joshua 24 and verse 14 reads.
Josh.24:14] Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
[15] And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
But let’s drop down and verse 24 reads.
Josh.24:24] And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
Back to John 12 and verse 27 reads.
John 12:27] Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
We just read above in Hebrews 2:14 the reason for Jesus coming in the flesh. But here you have heard from the lips of Jesus himself. We must remember that Jesus is the Word of God, and what is written in the Word will come to pass exactly as it is written.
John 12:28] Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
In Matthew 3:17 John the Baptist heard the voice of the LORD, now the people around Jesus heard the same voice. But what did they hear? That the LORD has glorified Jesus, and he will glorify him again. Let’s look at this word Glory. It is G1391 and means; Majesty, 1. a thing belonging to God. 2. the kingly majesty which belongs to him as supreme ruler, majesty in the sense of the absolute perfection of the deity. 3. a thing belonging to Christ. The kingly majesty of the Messiah. The absolutely perfect inward or personal excellency of Christ; the majesty. In other words, it belongs to God the Father until Jesus is Glorified through the crucifixion, in which it then belongs to Him. Back to John 12 and verse 29 reads.
John 12:29] The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
Some have ears to hear and some do not.
John 12:30] Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
Jesus prayed this prayer to the Father in the last chapter before he asked that Lazarus rise from the dead in John 11 and verse 42 reads.
John 11:42] And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
That they would believe that the Father had sent him. Back to John 12 and verse 31 reads.
John 12:31] Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
Let’s not overlook this very important statement Jesus makes here. This is the fifth day before the Passover. I’m inclined to believe that in the year that Satan comes at the sixth trump that it will be five days before Passover. Not that we will know the day, but that the wise shall know the season. Back to John 12 and verse 32 reads.
John 12:32] And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
[33] This he said, signifying what death he should die.
As Moses lifted up the serpent of brass on the pole in Numbers 21 so shall the Son of Man be lifted up. Now, the Pharisees wanted to stone him, but it is written his hands and his feet shall be pierced. He would be crucified. Let’s go to Romans 5 and verse 17 reads.
Rom.5:17] For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
[18] Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
Now let’s go to Hebrews 2 and verse 9 reads.
Heb.2:9] But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
[10] For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
Back to John 12 and verse 34 reads.
John 12:34] The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
They don’t get the resurrection. Let’s go to Psalms 89 and verse 36 reads.
Psa.89:36] His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before me.
[37] It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
Selah means; stop the music and meditate. He will connect this verse with the answer in the next verse.
Psa.89:38] But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.
[39] Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
Some will have ears to hear and some won’t. Now, let’s go to Isaiah 9 and verse 6 reads.
Isa.9:6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
[7] Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Jesus would often say behold it is written of me. Back to John 12 and verse 35 reads.
John 12:35] Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
Let’s go to Ephesians 5 and verse 6 reads.
Eph.5:6] Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
[7] Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
[8] For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Back to John 12 and verse 36 reads.
John 12:36] While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
He departed himself from them because they did not believe. Gen.1:3, John 1:3-5 and John 9:3-5 all speak of Jesus being the Light. We are to have Jesus within us and be the Light to the world. That would be the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit within us. Let’s go to Isaiah 53 and verse 1 reads.
Isa.53:1] Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
Again, for those with eyes to see and ears to hear. Back to John 12 and verse 37 reads.
John 12:37] But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
They saw and didn’t believe, but we read and believe. Let’s go to John 20 and verse 29 reads.
John 20:29] Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Back to John 12 and verse 38 reads.
John 12:38] That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
I know we just covered this above, but Jesus quotes Isaiah 53 and verse 1 reads.
Isa.53:1] Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
Always study to show thyself approved. Back to John 12 and verse 39 reads.
John 12:39] Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
[40] He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
[41] These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
Let’s go back to Isaiah, this time to Isaiah 6 and verse 5 reads.
Isa.6:5] Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
[6] Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
[7] And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
We have Jesus fulfilling prophecy, what exactly is prophecy? This is important. Prophecy always is compared to Jesus Christ, Who was, Who is and Who is to come. Keep this in mind as it is very important for what we are about to learn. He continues.
Isa.6:8] Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
Can the LORD send you, are you an Elect or an Apostle for these end times?
Isa.6:9] And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
[10] Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
Would the LORD really hide the truth from some? You better believe it.
Isa.6:11] Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
Until the sixth trump, when all the prophecies come to pass exactly as written. Are you ready to serve the LORD? Can you comprehend what is being said by Jesus? Back to John 12 and verse 42 reads.
John 12:42] Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
Even Jesus’s uncle Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus kept their mouths shut for fear of those who could put them out of the synagogue. This could only be the chief priests because both Joseph and Nicodemus were members of the Sanhedrin. We also read this in John 9:22.
John 12:43] For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
This should remind all of us we are speaking of the Kenites which have taken over the synagogues at this time, and will be in our churches in these end times.
John 12:44] Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
[45] And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
Let’s go to John 14 and verse 9 reads.
John 14:9] Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
And Isaiah 7 and verse 14 reads.
Isa.7:14] Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Immanuel means; God with us. Back to John 12 and verse 46 reads.
John 12:46] I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
From Genesis 1:3, Jesus is that Light. Notice that Jesus said I Am, his Holy name.
John 12:47] And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
He came in the first advent as Savior. One more advent to go, Come, LORD Jesus come.
John 12:48] He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
This is speaking of that second advent. It’s coming soon!
John 12:49] For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
Let’s go to Deuteronomy 18 and verse 15 reads.
Deu.18:15] The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
[16] According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
[17] And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
[18] I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
Back to John 12 and verse 50 reads.
John 12:50] And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
Remember what has been said here in John 12, now let’s go to John 3 and verse 14 reads.
John 3:14] And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
Remember Jesus said he must be lifted up.
John 3:15] That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
[16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
God’s commandment of everlasting life.
John 3:17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
That he came in this advent as Savior.
John 3:18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
[19] And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
[20] For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
John 3:16 is the most memorized verse in God’s Word, I just wished that all verses from 14-20 could be just as easily remembered. Let’s go to his throne.
