In today’s study our titles are; Verses 1-16 Jesus raises Lazarus. Verses 17-20 I Am the Resurrection and the Life. Verses 21-46 Three kinds of Faith. Verses 47-57 The Pharisees fear Jesus. John 11 and verse 1 reads.

John 11:1] Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

Lazarus is Greek for the Hebrew name Eleazar. Eleazar, the third son from Aaron, was to be the priest line that God had chosen to be High Priest. It is this priest line that Christ would come through. King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

John 11:2] (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Shows us here that this is the Mary who washed Jesus’s feet with her tears, then dried them with her hair. I’m sure this is the same woman who had the Alabaster box in Matthew 26:7-13, that would anoint Jesus for his burial and would be memorialized forever.

John 11:3] Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
[4] When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Just like with the man born blind, in John 9 and verse 3 reads.

John 9:3] Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
[4] I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
[5] As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Remember these last two verses. Back to John 11 and verse 5 reads.

John 11:5] Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

All three were disciples of Jesus Christ.

John 11:6] When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Jesus is purposely delaying his arrival to Lazarus so that the works of God should be made manifest (made known) through him.

John 11:7] Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
[8] His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

In the last chapter they tried to stone him for blasphemy, saying he was the Son of God. John 10:33.

John 11:9] Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
[10] But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

He repeats what he said above in John 9:4-5, I said remember these verses. Let’s go to Micah 7 and verse 8 reads.

Mic.7:8] Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.

That some have no light in him shows us not all are of his flock. Back to John 11 and verse 11 reads.

John 11:11] These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

Jesus has a way of talking. Sleep does mean dead, but only when Jesus is planning on bringing them back to life. We see this in Mat.9:23-25 when Jesus brought the child of a certain ruler back to life. His disciples don’t seem to understand and Jesus will have to speak bluntly to them.

John 11:12] Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
[13] Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
[14] Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

They said if he sleeps then let him sleep. Now, they know he is dead and will go with him.

John 11:15] And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

Now we have the reason, for his disciples still had a little unbelief.

John 11:16] Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Didymus means; twins. Apparently, he was a twin. But also, it is his surname. Thomas seems to always be doubtful, thinking Jesus would die. Has not Jesus already told them all that he must go into Jerusalem, and be delivered to the high priests and crucified and on the third day he would be raised up again.

John 11:17] Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
[18] Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

Bethany is about 1¾ miles from Jerusalem. These four days Jesus was waiting for the right time.

John 11:19] And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
[20] Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Mary means; A tear. Martha means; She was rebellious.

John 11:21] Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
[22] But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

She has great faith and knows the Word of God, she knows that Jesus would receive great power while here on earth. Let’s go to Psalms 111 and verse 6 reads.

Psa.111:6] He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
[7] The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.

Back to John 11 and verse 23 reads.

John 11:23] Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
[24] Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Martha knows scripture very well. Remember she also is a disciple, but not of the twelve. She speaks of Ecclesiastes 12 and verse 6 reads.

Ecc.12:6] Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
[7] Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

When we die, instantly our spirit returns to the Father. Back to John 11 and verse 25 reads.

John 11:25] Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
[26] And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
[27] She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

This is the proclamation of our baptism, with repentance, we shall have life eternal. Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:22-23, A virgin shall conceive and a child shall be born and you will call his name Emmanuel, God with us.

John 11:28] And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
[29] As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

Jesus said for the glory of the LORD this will be seen by all.

John 11:30] Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
[31] The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
[32] Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

A true statement, but then the glory of the LORD would not have happened for all to witness.

John 11:33] When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

Let’s check out this word Groaned. It is G1690 from G1722 embrimaomai pronounced em-brim-ah’-om-ahee and means; 1. to charge with earnest admonition, sternly to charge, threatened to enjoin. (to snort with anger) as a horse. This is why Jesus was troubled. He was angered with their unbelief.

John 11:34] And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
[35] Jesus wept.

Jesus wept for the lack of knowledge of scriptures. Remember Ecclesiastes 12:7. This means that Lazarus was with the Father and Jesus had to bring him back. Now, we can understand why Jesus said that for the Glory of God this would be done. Back to John 11 and verse 36 reads.

John 11:36] Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
[37] And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

They witnessed the healing of the blind man.

John 11:38] Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Jesus groaned again when he had heard them, remember, it was the lack of knowledge of scriptures that made Jesus groan the first time.

John 11:39] Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
[40] Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Glory is Life. Jesus told her she would see the Glory of God.

John 11:41] Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
[42] And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

In John 17, the true LORD’s Prayer, Jesus speaks of us to the Father, and verse 10 reads.

John 17:10] And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
[11] And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
[12] While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
[13] And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
[14] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

We are not of this world, but by law must come through the flesh and are given his Word for our belief on him.

John 17:15] I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
[16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
[17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Jesus is the Living Word, his truth, we hold it in our hands.

John 17:18] As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

We, who have eyes to see, are sent (Apostles) into this world as his Elect.

John 17:19] And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
[20] Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Through the witness and teachings of God’s Elect.

John 17:21] That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
[22] And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
[23] I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Jesus would send us the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. The reason for Christ being crucified is for those who teach the Word of God to others, that they might also receive Life Everlasting. Back to John 11, two miracles will happen next. One, Lazarus being bound with grave clothes will come forth. The second, he is risen from the dead, and verse 43 reads.

John 11:43] And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
[44] And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

The priest line is no longer bound by traditions of the elders, which made void the Word of God. This is important because Jesus is of the priest line also. Melchisedek, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Lazarus will become the new priest line, because the old had been corrupted, of the new church that will be built on Peter.

John 11:45] Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

And the church grows.

John 11:46] But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

Satan loves to confuse a church. Kenites will always be within the walls of a church. Beware of them and their false teachings.

John 11:47] Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

Let’s go to Psalms 2 and verse 1 reads.

Psa.2:1] Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
[2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
[3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

Back to John 11 and verse 48 reads.

John 11:48] If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Here comes another prophecy being fulfilled. Let’s go to Zechariah 13 and verse 6 reads.

Zec.13:6] And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Note the wounds in his hands, they will nail him to the cross.

Zec.13:7] Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

Back to John 11 and verse 49 reads.

John 11:49] And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
[50] Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
[51] And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

It was the Holy Spirit that spoke through him and he comprehended it not. Caiaphas has just admitted Jesus was Savior, the Son of God. This prophecy of one man dying for the nation is the whole of Psalms 22.

John 11:52] And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Let’s go to Isaiah 49 and verse 5 reads.

Isa.49:5] And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.
[6] And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

And in 1John 2 and verse 2 reads.

1John 2:2] And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Back to John 11 and verse 53 reads.

John 11:53] Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

Because they feared Jesus, they wanted him dead. Truly, these are Kenites as Jesus told us in Matthew 13, the parable of the Tares.

John 11:54] Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

Jesus stayed in the land of the ten tribes of Israel north of Judah.

John 11:55] And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

Here we have the law of Passover, all would come from all over the world to Judah for the feast of Passover. Let’s go to Exodus 12 and verse 14 reads.

Exo.12:14] And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

Back to John 11 and verse 56 reads.

John 11:56] Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
[57] Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

Conspiracy has been made between the Kenites. Truly of their father Cain, the first murderer, child of the serpent. Let’s go to his throne.

Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
