Our title for today’s lesson is; Verses 1-26 Jesus prays for his own. In this chapter we will hear the real Lord’s Prayer. This will be Jesus praying to the Father on our behalf. There are three great intercessors in God’s Word, Moses, Samual and now Jesus. John 17 and verse 1 reads.
John 17:1] These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
Glory is G1391 doxa pronounced dox’-ah and means; 1. a thing belonging to God. 2. the kingly majesty which belongs to him as supreme ruler, majesty in the sense of the absolute perfection of the deity. 3. a thing belonging to Christ. the kingly majesty of the Messiah. We see it belonged to God the Father until the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and afterwards only to Christ the Messiah. This is his Glory, now and forever, Amen.
John 17:2] As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
As prophesied by Daniel the prophet, Daniel 7 and verse 13 reads.
Dan.7:13] I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
[14] And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
Back to John 17 and verse 3 reads.
John 17:3] And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Let’s go to Isaiah 53 and verse 11 reads.
Isa.53:11] He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Now, let’s go to 1Corinthians 8 and verse 4 reads.
1Cor.8:4] As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
And finally, in 1Thessalonians 1 and verse 7 reads.
1Thes.1:7] So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
[8] For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
[9] For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
[10] And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
Without believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, we have no Salvation. Back to John 17 and verse 4 reads.
John 17:4] I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
Let’s go to Luke and see the first words of Jesus when he was only twelve years old in Luke 2 and verse 49 reads.
Luke 2:49] And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?
And when Jesus was at the well with the woman, he answered his disciples in John 4 and 34 reads.
John 4:34] Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Now let’s read Jesus’s last words on the cross, John 19 and verse 30 reads.
John 19:30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
And the Glory of God was given from that moment on to Christ the Messiah. Back to John 17 and verse 5 reads.
John 17:5] And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Here we see that Glory was with Christ before the world was, proving the Trinity of the full Godhead, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are One. Let’s go to John 1 and verse 1 reads.
John 1:1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[2] The same was in the beginning with God.
[3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
And verse 14 reads.
John 1:14] And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
We see it is all for his Glory, Amen. Fulfilling prophecy, Isaiah 7:14, and the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy. Rev.19:10. Back to John 17 and verse 6 reads.
John 17:6] I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
[7] Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
[8] For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
[9] I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
Jesus is speaking of his Elect here, I know you are one of his Elect if you have been studying with me thus far. Let’s go to 1John 5 and verse 18 reads.
1John 5:18] We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
Our sins are blotted out upon repentance, those who hate God repenteth not.
1John 5:19] And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
[20] And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
[21] Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
The tenderness of John when he writes is touching. Back to John 17 and verse 10 reads.
John 17:10] And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
The Glory of Jesus Christ comes from his crucifixion, and the fact that on repentance our sins are forgiven. This is the Glory of the LORD.
John 17:11] And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
A very important verse in this chapter. Praying for his Elect that are still in the world, Jesus prays to the Holy Father for our sakes who are left in the world, even until today. Left in the world to Do his Works. Let’s go to Jesus’s last words to his disciples before he ascended back to the Father in Acts 1 and verse 6 reads.
Acts 1:6] When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
Will this be the end of the world? Thinking maybe the second advent has come to pass.
Acts 1:7] And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
Not for them to know, because it was not the time.
Acts 1:8] But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
This was written for you today. God’s Elect will know the season. Your eyes will be opened and your ears will hear.
Acts 1:9] And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
It said in verse 11 that we may be one as even they are One. That means we are One with them if we are in Him, his Word. Back to John 17 and verse 12 reads.
John 17:12] While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
Only the son of perdition, Satan, will be lost. All others have the opportunity to repent and come back to the Father. We have learned that many will not repent, but Satan is the only one given by name and the fallen angels are not named. Let’s go to Ezekiel 28, God is speaking to Satan and verse 18 reads.
Eze.28:18] Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
For our God is a consuming fire, Heb.12:29, let’s go and see when he commits this abomination in 2Thessalonians 2 and verse 3 reads.
2Thes.2:3] Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
[4] Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
At the sixth trump Satan will deceive the whole world as the antichrist, all will be deceived and worship him with the exception of God’s Elect. Back to John 17 and verse 13 reads.
John 17:13] And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
His joy is fulfilled as John the Baptist said in John 3 and verse 29 reads.
John 3:29] He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
For this our joy is fulfilled, at the time of the marriage to the Lamb. Back to John 17 and verse 14 reads.
John 17:14] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Let’s go to 1John 3 and verse 10 reads.
1John 3:10] In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
There are two seed lines, the children of God and the serpent’s seed, the Kenites. He that hath an ear, let him hear.
1John 3:11] For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
[12] Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
[13] Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
The Kenites are the offspring of Cain, of the serpent’s seed. Back to John 17 and verse 15 reads.
John 17:15] I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
Let’s go to Galatians 1 and verse 4 reads.
Gal.1:4] Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
[5] To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
And in 2Thessalonians 3 and verse 3 reads.
2Thes.3:3] But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
He will never leave you or forsake you, have Faith. Back to John 17 and verse 16 reads.
John 17:16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
We studied this in John 15 and verse 18 reads.
John 15:18] If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
[19] If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
The world will hate God’s Elect, those chosen out of the world. Back to John 17 and verse 17 reads.
John 17:17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
The Word is Truth, Jesus is the Living Word. Let’s go to Ephesians 5 and verse 24 reads.
Eph.5:24] Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
[25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
[26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
[27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Our homes are churches also.
Eph.5:28] So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
[29] For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
[30] For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
This is for the Glory of the LORD. Back to John 17 and verse 18 reads.
John 17:18] As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
You are chosen, you are sent. Let’s go to Ephesians 1 and verse 3 reads.
Eph.1:3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
[4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
This word Foundation is G2602 from G2598 Katabole, The overthrow of Satan in the first earth age. He has chosen us since then.
Eph.1:5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
[6] To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
For the Glory of his Grace, he has predestinated us for this reason in these end times to Stand against Satan and to give witness of Jesus Christ. Back to John 17 and verse 19 reads.
John 17:19] And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Let’s go to Hebrews 10 and verse 10 reads.
Heb.10:10] By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
From the crucifixion comes our sanctity through the Glory of the Messiah, Jesus Christ on the cross. The Lamb of God sacrificed once and for all time as promised to Abraham in Gen.22. Back to John 17 and verse 20 reads.
John 17:20] Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Did you catch that? Not for us alone, but for all who we teach and bring to Jesus while doing his works here on earth. From these works comes our rewards.
John 17:21] That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
We learned in John 14 that if we are in the Word, then the Father and the Son dwell within us. Let’s go to Galatians 3 and verse 27 reads.
Gal.3:27] For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
[28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Back to John 17 and verse 22 reads.
John 17:22] And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
The Glory that now belongs to Jesus Christ dwells now within us. Let’s go to John 14 and verse 20 reads.
John 14:20] At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
[21] He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Jesus will manifest, make known, himself to us by opening our eyes to his Word. Let’s go to 1John 1 and verse 2 reads.
1John 1:2] (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
[3] That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
[4] And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
That our Joy may be full. John 17:13. Back to John 17 and verse 23 reads.
John 17:23] I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Don’t overlook that the world may know that the Father has loved us.
John 17:24] Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
That God has loved the Son from the first earth age, bringing in this second earth age for Salvation. Let’s go to John 14 and verse 3 reads.
John 14:3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
[4] And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Jesus is the way. The Word of God is the way. Back to John 17 and verse 25 reads.
John 17:25] O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
Because of the Holy Spirit that now dwells within us, we know the Son and the Father.
John 17:26] And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
What a beautiful prayer from Jesus on our behalf to the Father for our sakes. Let’s go to 2Peter 3 and verse 9 reads.
2Pet.3:9] The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
That all will come to repentance, for his blood on the cross was for once and all time, that none of which God has given into his hand will be lost. Let’s go to his throne.
