In today’s study our titles are; Verses 1-3 Jesus warns of Persecution. Verses 4-6 Jesus speaks of his leaving and the coming of the Comforter. Verses 7-15 The work of the Holy Spirit. Verses 16-24 Sorrow to turn into Joy. Verses 25-33 I have overcome the world. John 16 and verse 1 reads.
John 16:1] These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
[2] They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
From John 9 and on, they have been threatening to put anyone who called Jesus the Christ out of the synagogue. But Jesus says the time cometh, this should open the eyes of the Elect. Let’s go to 1Corinthians 10 and verse 11 reads.
1Cor.10:11] Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Always keep that verse in mind. Let’s go to Mark 13 and verse 9 reads.
Mark 13:9] But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.
This word testimony is G3142 marturion from G3144 martus where we get our word Martyr from, and means; 1. those who after his example have proved the strength and genuineness of their faith in Christ by undergoing a violent death. Remember they think they do God a service, their father is not our Father. You better believe they are Islamist. Let’s go to 2Thessalonians 1 and verse 10 reads.
2Thes.1:10] When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
[11] Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
For we are God’s Elect and when they kill us for the testimony of Jesus Christ our jobs are finished. Let’s go to Revelation 6 and verse 9 reads.
Rev.6:9] And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
[10] And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
[11] And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
The very next verse is the sixth seal, sixth trump and sixth vial. Satan comes and God’s Elect shall put on that gospel armor and STAND against the antichrist. Do not fear what they can do to the body, but fear (love) him that can kill the body and the soul. Back to John 16 and verse 3 reads.
John 16:3] And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
Let’s go to John 15 and verse 20 reads.
John 15:20] Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
[21] But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
Because we call ourselves Christians. It is Christianity that is persecuted in these end times. Look around the world, they (the Islamist) are killing us left and right everywhere. Back to John 16 and verse 4 reads.
John 16:4] But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
If the disciples knew about his crucifixion from the beginning, they would have prevented what is written from coming to pass.
John 16:5] But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
[6] But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
[7] Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
For your sake I do this. The Comforter is Jesus Christ and the Father in us. Chapter 15 explained this. Where the two are, there is the Holy Spirit. But note that it comes from Jesus. The Holy Spirit comes to these twelve at the Pentecost in Acts 2. Prophesied in Joel 2. But because it pertains to us in these end times, let’s go to Acts 2 and verse 3 reads.
Acts 2:3] And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
[4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
[5] And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
[6] Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Not in Babbel, or jibberish, but in his own language.
Acts 2:7] And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
[8] And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
In the very dialect in which they were born they heard them speak. Skip down to verse 14 and it reads.
Acts 2:14] But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
[15] For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
[16] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Prophecies always pertain to Jesus, who was, who is and who is to come, a trifecta.
Acts 2:17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Notice it says; In the last days.
Acts 2:18] And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
We will give a testimony against them.
Acts 2:19] And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
[20] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
[21] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Let’s go to Joel 2 and verse 28 reads.
Joel 2:28] And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
[29] And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
[30] And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
[31] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
[32] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
The Elect shall be delivered up to the antichrist, and the Holy Spirit shall speak through the Elect (remnant). Back to John 16 and verse 8 reads.
John 16:8] And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
This word Reprove is G1651 and means; To convict, refute, confute. Who does this? The Holy Spirit within you does this. The last words Jesus spoke with them was in Acts 1 and verse 8 reads.
Acts 1:8] But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Back to John 16, Jesus gives all three reasons, and verse 9 reads.
John 16:9] Of sin, because they believe not on me;
How can you know sin except that you believe in Him? What is sin? Sin is transgression of the law. His word.
John 16:10] Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Convicts you of faithlessness. Faith without seeing him and still believing on Him is powerful. Let’s go to John 20 and verse 29 reads.
John 20:29] Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Back to John 16 and verse 11 reads.
John 16:11] Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Convicts you because Jesus came into this world in the flesh also but for one reason. Heb.2:14 and it reads.
Heb.2:14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Notice that Jesus comes back as Judge, and that Judged is written as past tense. We learn in Ezekiel 28 that Satan is turned to ashes from within. Let’s go to Luke 10 and verse 18 reads.
Luke 10:18] And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Now let’s go to Revelation 12 and verse 7 reads.
Rev.12:7] And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
[8] And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
[9] And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Do not be deceived, the antichrist comes first, there will be no flying away except into the lap of Satan. Back to John 16 and verse 12 reads.
John 16:12] I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
[13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He (The Holy Spirit) will speak through us when we are delivered up to the antichrist. Mark 13.
John 16:14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Still speaking of the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in Jesus’s name to us, the Holy Spirit will glorify God when he speaks through us.
John 16:15] All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Speaking to his disciples, are you a disciple? He is speaking to you.
John 16:16] A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
Remember Mary at the tomb, Jesus said to her; Touch me not, I go to the Father. Then returned to them again.
John 16:17] Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
[18] They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
[19] Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
[20] Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
His disciples cannot understand he is going to be crucified. Jesus has hid this from them so they would not interfere, though he has foretold them. Because Salvation for all had come into the world. They would be sorry when Jesus is crucified, but after three days in the tomb, he would be glorified. But because they still don’t understand he would give them examples.
John 16:21] A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
Jesus quotes Isaiah 26 and verse 17 reads.
Isa.26:17] Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
[18] We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
[19] Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
Even in the Old Testament we have our Salvation being prophesied. Back to John 16 and verse 22 reads.
John 16:22] And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
Let’s go to 1Peter 1 and verse 8 reads.
1Pet.1:8] Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
[9] Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
[10] Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
This is why I cannot teach the New without the Old. In Revelation 19:10 it says; For the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy. Back to John 16 and verse 23 reads.
John 16:23] And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
[24] Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
Jesus seems to want them to ask him something. I say, pray for eyes and ears to be opened. Jesus gives us the greatest prayer for our sakes in John 17, let’s pick it up with verse 13 and it reads.
John 17:13] And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
[14] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
We have his Word, and we are not of this world but chosen out of this world from the foundation of this world. We are his Elect. Back to John 16 and verse 25 reads.
John 16:25] These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
[26] At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
In John 17 he gives the most beautiful prayer for us to the Father.
John 16:27] For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
Jesus is saying his prayer was not needed for the Father loves us already because of our belief.
John 16:28] I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
Jesus came for two reasons. One, to defeat Death, that is the Devil. Heb.2:14. Two, for Salvation unto the world.
John 16:29] His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
[30] Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Do they really believe?
John 16:31] Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
[32] Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
Jesus quotes scripture again. Let’s go to Zechariah 13 and verse 7 reads.
Zec.13:7] Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
This is why we check the scriptures when they are brought to our attention. Here we find; And I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. That is you and me, our protection from the evil of this world. That wall that God has around us, is the Comforter. Back to John 16 and verse 33 reads.
John 16:33] These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Jesus said in Luke that he brings division. Luke 12 and verse 51 reads.
Luke 12:51] Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:.
This is that promise of the first prophecy in God’s Word. Let’s go to Genesis 3 and verse 15 reads.
Gen.3:15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Between the serpent’s seed and the woman’s seed. We learned in Mat.13 with the parable of the Tares that the woman’s seed are the children of God. We will bruise his head (Chittum) when we are delivered up to him at the sixth trump. He (the old serpent, the dragon, the devil, Satan) bruised his (Jesus) heels when they crucified him on the cross. We will have tribulations in this world. But Jesus is in us, and the Father in Him, and with that the Holy Spirit also within us. We are not alone. He will never leave us or forsake us. Praise the Lord and let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
