It keeps getting better and better, John 16 and verse 1 reads.
John 16:1] These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
[2] They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
Jesus is talking to his disciples here, but I can’t help but think of 1Cor.10:11. So let’s read it one more time for my sake.
1Cor.10:11] Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Kill you and think he does Gods work? Be prepared in these end times, for you and I are disciples of Christ. Back to John and verse 3 reads.
John 16:3] And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
Yet they will kill us for God’s sake? Their rock is not our Rock.
John 16:4] But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
If they knew what would happen, they might interfere with Gods will, and what was written. Call it human nature.
John 16:5] But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
[6] But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
[7] Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
For your sake I do this. The Comforter is Jesus Christ and the Father in us. chapter 15 explained this. Where the two are, there is the Holy Spirit. But note that it comes from Jesus.
John 16:8] And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Reprove is G1651 and means to convict, refute, confute. Who does this? The Comforter does this. Think of it as your conscience, but really it is the Holy Spirit in you. Now he gives the three things He (the Comforter) convicts the whole world in.
John 16:9] Of sin, because they believe not on me;
How can you know sin except that you believe in Him. What is sin? Sin is transgression of the law. His word.
John 16:10] Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Convicts you of faithlessness. Faith without seeing him and still believing on Him is powerful.
John 16:11] Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Convicts you because Jesus came into this world in the flesh also but for one reason. Heb.2:14 and it reads.
Heb.2:14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
After his resurrection he is Judge. Notice that judged was written, past tensed. Eze.28, he will be turned to ashes from within. Back to John and verse 12 reads.
John 16:12] I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
[13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He will speak through us when we are delivered up to the antichrist, Mark 13.
John 16:14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
[15] All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Again, he is speaking to his disciples here. We are his disciples also.
John 16:16] A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
Can’t help but think of Mary at the tomb. When Jesus said to her “touch me not, I go to the Father.”
John 16:17] Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
[18] They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
[19] Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
[20] Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Because Salvation for all had come into the world. They would be sorry because they knew him and they crucified him, but after 3 days in the tomb he would be glorified, and rise again. But because they still don’t understand he would give them examples.
John 16:21] A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
[22] And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
That door that no man can shut because you have a little strength.
John 16:23] And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
[24] Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
Jesus wants them to ask for something. I say pray for our eyes to be opened.
John 16:25] These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
[26] At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
In the next chapter we will hear the most beautiful prayer from Jesus to the Father.
John 16:27] For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
[28] I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
He came for a purpose, Salvation and to defeat the Devil.
John 16:29] His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
[30] Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
They think that they get it now, but do they?
John 16:31] Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
Just like with Peter, this will hurt. But I think its for our sake, as a reminder to us that we never lose faith.
John 16:32] Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
Jesus brought up Zec, 13:7, and we will read it.
Zec.13:7] Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
This is why we check out the scriptures that Jesus brings up. Here we find “and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.” That’s you and me, our protection from the evil of this world. That wall that God has around us, is that Comforter. Back to John and verse 33 reads.
John 16:33] These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
He never promised that everything would be roses. On the contrary, we will have tribulations in this world. But Jesus is in us, and the Father in Him, and with that the Holy Spirit also within us. We are not alone. He will never leave us or forsake us. Praise the Lord and let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
