JOHN 2

Today’s titles are; Verses 1-12 The miracle at Cana of Galilee. Verses 13-25 Jesus cleanses the temple. John 2 and verse 1 reads.

John 2:1] And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

This is the third day after John 1:43. Jesus’s mother, Mary, was probably there as an overseer of the wedding.

John 2:2] And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

There are many people here at this wedding, Jesus and his disciples also.

John 2:3] And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
[4] Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

Jesus is not speaking rudely to his mother, he simply said his time was not yet come. Meaning for his crucifixion, the wine for his blood. His mother did not mean it was time for that, but rather for a miracle. They came to her for more wine and she had none.

John 2:5] His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Showing his mother was overseer of the wedding festivities.

John 2:6] And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

Approximately 9 gallons of water each giving us 27 gallons in all.

John 2:7] Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
[8] And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
[9] When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

The servants observed the miracle of the water being turned into wine.

John 2:10] And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

Before we go any further, many people say this wasn’t really wine. I guess they just can’t imagine our Lord contributing any alcohol to the people. Let’s look at this word Wine in the Greek G3631 from the Hebrew word H3196 yayin pronounced yah’-yin. And means; wine (as fermented); by implication intoxication. Jesus not only made the water into wine, but the best wine ever made. For those who cannot believe Jesus would do such a thing, remember, it has become our sacrament. Let’s go to Luke 7 and verse 33 reads.

Luke 7:33] For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

John the Baptist was under the vow of a Nazarene.

Luke 7:34] The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

And Jesus was not under the vow of the Nazarene. He drank wine. Back to John 2 and verse 11 reads.

John 2:11] This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

It was at this time that Jesus manifested, made known, his glory that he was the Son of God, and his disciples believed on him.

John 2:12] After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

Capernaum means; city of compassion. His disciples are those who he said to follow me. They would become the twelve apostles, Sent ones. We see here that his mother and his half-brothers also went with him, they too were disciples of Christ.

John 2:13] And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

This is Jesus’s first Passover during his ministry. Let’s go to Exodus 12 and verse 14 reads.

Exo.12:14] And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

This is why here at TheChristMinistries.org we observe Passover instead of Easter, which is a pagan holiday, Grove worship.

John 2:14] And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

Found them selling the gift of God for money. This will anger Jesus very much, let’s go to Malachi 3 and verse 1 reads.

Mal.3:1] Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to this temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
[2] But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:
[3] And he shall sit as a refiner and purifer of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

You can’t buy the blessing of forgiveness for sins with money. You must take from your flock the best and give it for a sacrifice. Now, Jesus is the Lamb of God, and he will sacrifice himself once and for all time, so that on repentance all sins may be forgiven. Back to John 2 and verse 15 reads.

John 2:15] And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

Let’s go to Jeremiah 10 and verse 10 reads.

Jer.10:10] But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

Back to John 2 and verse 16 reads.

John 2:16] And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.
[17] And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

Written in Psalms 69 and verse 9 reads.

Psa.69:9] For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Back to John 2 and verse 18 reads.

John 2:18] Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

Later when they asked him this question, he would answer the sign of Jonah. Three days in the tomb. Let’s go to Matthew 12 and verse 39 reads.

Mat.12:39] But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

An evil and adulterous generation, speaking of the Kenites, the serpent’s seed.

Mat.12:40] For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
[41] The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

Back to John 2 and verse 19 reads.

John 2:19] Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

Here is the charge against Jesus at his trial, they would lie and say He would destroy the temple. This is not what Jesus said, he said If you destroy the temple I will raise it up in three days. Jesus is speaking of his body. Let’s go to Revelation 21 and verse 22 reads.

Rev.21:22] And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

That will be the temple for eternity. But those who questioned the Lord will show they knew he was not saying he would destroy the temple but rather that he said he could raise it up again. The reason Jesus is saying he would be risen again has everything to do with his body being the temple. Let’s go to 1Corinthians 6 and verse 19 reads.

1Cor.6:19] What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
[20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Back to John 2 and verse 20 reads.

John 2:20] Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
[21] But he spake of the temple of his body.

This is very important for us to understand today. We just talked about this above, 1Corinthians 6:19, the temple of the LORD is the body of Jesus Christ which is the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. Let’s go to 1Corinthians 3 and verse 16 reads.

1Cor.3:16] Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
[17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

Let’s go to Colossians 2 and verse 8 reads.

Col.2:8] Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
[9] For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

When we say the Holy Spirit dwells within us, we mean the whole Godhead bodily, meaning; The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit.

Col.2:10] And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
[11] In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

Circumcision is of the heart and for both men and women. The blood ordinances are done away with from the law after the crucifixion.

Col.2:12] Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Baptism; going under the water represents Christ going into the tomb. Coming out of the water represents Jesus rising from the tomb on the third day.

Col.2:13] And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
[14] Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Back to John 2 and verse 22 reads.

John 2:22] When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

The eyes of his disciples were shut so they would not interfere with what the scriptures said needed to happen. Psalms 22 and Isaiah 53 (as well as many others) describing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

John 2:23] Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

Don’t overlook it said believed in his name. Jesus G2424 Iēsous pronounced ee-ay-sooce’, and means; Yahoveh’s Savior. 1. Jesus, the Son of God, the Saviour of mankind, God incarnate. (God incarnate John 1:14.)

John 2:24] But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
[25] And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

Jesus knew all men. Let’s go to Acts 2 and verse 21 reads.

Acts 2:21] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
[22] Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
[23] Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Yes, Jesus knew all men, and this was the reason for the need of Salvation. Let’s go to his throne.
