Another great study today so, lets get right into it. Matthew 26 and it reads.
Matthew 26
Mat.26:1] And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,
[2] Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
Betrayed and crucified, both which were prophesied of in the Old Testament.
Mat.26:3] Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
[4] And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.
To take Jesus without the people knowing, and to kill him. And these are the religious leaders, breaking the 6th. commandment of God.
Mat.26:5] But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
The multitudes that followed Jesus, they might get a little upset. So, they conspired to do this secretly, trying not to do this on the High Sabbath.
Mat.26:6] Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
[7] There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
Not that Simon was still leprous, but this was obviously one that had been healed.
Mat.26:8] But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
[9] For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
[10] When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
[11] For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
Proving Jesus wasn’t a socialist, he didn’t think it was the governments job to feed the poor, but rather every individual had the responsibility to take care of the poor. Jesus was upset that this woman was being vilified for anointing him. And he will explain.
Mat.26:12] For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
[13] Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
And by reading this now, we just did. Every time this is read, she is memorialized.
Mat.26:14] Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
[15] And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
Prophesied in Zechariah and 11:12 reads.
Zec.11:12] And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
[13] And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
Fulfilling prophesy, the silver and the potters field, both were fulfilled here.
Mat.26:16] And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
For it was prophesied in Psalms 41:9 so let’,s read.
Psa.41:9] Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Back to Matthew 26 and it reads.
Mat.26:17] Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
[18] And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
[19] And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
Jesus is always prepared. But, I want to remind us why is this so important. Let’s read 1Cor.5:7-8.
1Cor.5:7] Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
[8] Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Christ became our Passover. Our Passover Lamb. Not our “easter.” Back to Matthew and it reads.
Mat.26:20] Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
[21] And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
[22] And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
[23] And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
[24] The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
[25] Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
Not one of the twelve could imagine one of the others betraying Jesus. So they asked, is it me? Not thinking or not remembering scriptures that would say this. Judas would still partake with them the sacraments.
Mat.26:26] And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
[27] And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
[28] For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
And this is why we take it today. For the new testament, his blood on the cross for our sins. Doing away with the blood ordinance only and not the rest of the laws. Why we don’t offer sacrifices anymore.
Mat.26:29] But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
Jesus just said after this I won’t drink anymore wine. Yes, he was called a Nazarene, also fulfilling prophesy, but he was born in Bethlehem. No where does it say that He was under the vow of a Nazarene.
Mat.26:30] And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
[31] Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
Jesus always quoting and or fulfilling Gods word. It is written, but where? Zec.13.6-7.
Zec.13:6] And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
[7] Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
I find it fascinating how much more information is given when we go back to where Jesus says it is written. Notice we also read the “wounds in his hands”. Back to Matthew 26 and verse 32 reads.
Mat.26:32] But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
Telling them right here to go to Galilee, how could they forget? I would think they would have ran to Galilee.
Mat.26:33] Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
[34] Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
[35] Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
Who could have thought they would deny Jesus that night. This must have been very heart breaking when he did. But we just read in Zechariah this would happen. Compassion, Jesus loves his children, when we or those twelve show how much we love him but can’t imagine ever denying him. We must always remember the examples that are given to us. Again 1Cor.10:11reads.
1Cor.10:11] Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
For us today did all this happen to them. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word that gives precious insight into how your “Will” will happen in these end times. Bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
