This is a letter from Paul to Timothy, Timothy meaning “honored by God”. This is a pastoral message to Timothy about how to keep a church. I would like to add to the fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, how to keep a home. Bringing up your children in the Word of God. 1Tim.1 and verse 1 reads.
1Tim.1:1] Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
Paul was ordained by Jesus Christ and given a threefold ministry. Acts 9:15.
1Tim.1:2] Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
This letter was given to Timothy by the full Godhead. Something I want you to keep in mind as this should pertain to your households. Notice also that Paul calls Timothy his spiritual son, not meaning his biological son.
1Tim.1:3] As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
[4] Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
Teach God’s word only and not the traditions of men. Let the word of God do the edifying, let it be all that is taught to others.
1Tim.1:5] Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
Charity is love, let it come from your pure heart, your sound mind. And let your faith be strong in the Lord.
1Tim.1:6] From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
Jangling is a ratchet jaw, or maybe like a yo-yo. They go up and down on a string and get nowhere.
1Tim.1:7] Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
They want to be teachers but have no knowledge of the law, and can’t find it in the word of God. They don’t know what was nailed to the cross, blood ordinance, and what is still in effect. Jesus tells us in Mat.5:17-20 and it reads.
Mat.5:17] Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
This second earth age shall not pass until all be fulfilled. Meaning all law and prophecies.
Mat.5:19] Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Read that very carefully again, we are to Do and Teach. Those who teach falsely will pay a great price.
Mat.5:20] For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Our righteousness must be greater than the false teachers (Kenites) of that time as well as our own time. Back to 1Timothy and verse 8 reads.
1Tim.1:8] But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
It is written in the 1st. epistle of John 3:4 and it reads.
1John 3:4] Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Do not let any man tell you that we are not under law, they are lying to you. But through Christ we have salvation through repentance. Back to 1 Tim.1 and verse 9 reads.
1Tim.1:9] Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
We even post laws on the highways so when they are broken then the punishment can be charged. If that helps you understand a little better.
1Tim.1:10] For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
This is why we have law, for the unrighteousness of man. Let’s not overlook this in the New Testament, talking about those that defile themselves with mankind. These are homosexuals and the LORD is against it.
1Tim.1:11] According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
That sound doctrine spoken of back in verse 10, it is committed to us also.
1Tim.1:12] And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
[13] Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
Paul was struck down and blinded in Acts 9. He was ignorant of Isa.7:14 which states “A virgin shall conceive”, as well as Num.24:17. Those who claim to know Moses, but overlook that Moses prophesied about the coming of Christ. Num.24:17 reads.
Num.24:17] I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
Sheth means Trouble. This is how Jesus could say not one jot or tittle shall be changed of the law until all be fulfilled. Back to 1 Tim.1 and verse 14 reads.
1Tim.1:14] And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
[15] This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Grace is unmerited favor, meaning we didn’t earn it but that the LORD loved us. Now Paul is coming down on himself very hard because he persecuted the church. But his heart was with the LORD, now he can be zealous for the church as he was for the LORD. Let us remember “But there go I”.
1Tim.1:16] Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
By the patience of the Lord, he is saved. And for all who believe after should be saved also.
1Tim.1:17] Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Amen is “That’s that”.
1Tim.1:18] This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
Our war is with the principalities in this world. But make no mistake our God is a God of War. And our military personnel should know this prayer. Psa.144 reads.
Psa.144:1] Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
[2] My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
Back to 1 Tim.1 and verse 19 reads.
1Tim.1:19] Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
Faith is our shield, if you put that away then you put off the gospel armor.
1Tim.1:20] Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Hymenaeus (G5211) was an opponent of Christianity and Paul. These two (Hymenaeus and Alexander) did not believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They were unbelievers put out of the church before they could corrupt the church and others. This is how to handle a church, with discipline. A great book for all pastors and parents. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
