Romans 7 and verse 1 reads.
Rom.7:1] Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
As long as we are in the flesh, we are under law. But, with Christ we are given the grace of repentance. Now, for marriage.
Rom.7:2] For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
[3] So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
The woman is “called” an adulteress. But not if she repents, for if she repents then her sins do not remain, they have been forgiven. This also goes for the man. Many people put others under bondage with this verse. Did not Jesus say “The truth shall set you free.” But by the Grace of God, we have forgiveness.
Rom.7:4] Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
We wait for that marriage to the Lamb. This just took gender out of the equation. And do what? Bring forth fruit unto God. Fruit is your works, the only thing we take with us to heaven.
Rom.7:5] For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
[6] But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
Once saved always saved is not written in God’s word, if it were so, then you never sinned again. Good for you but I don’t believe you to be that good at not sinning. For we all sin, it’s that we have repentance of sin that keeps us saved by the grace of Jesus Christ and him only.
Rom.7:7] What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Now we see that it is law that shows us our sin.
Rom.7:8] But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
Concupiscence is G1939 in the Strongs’, and is Epithumia in the Greek. And means desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, lust. Wrought is worked.
Rom.7:9] For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
[10] And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
The commandment for sin is death.
Rom.7:11] For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
[12] Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
The law is holy, this is why the blood ordinances were holy. This is why his blood on the cross covers our sins on repentance. Through his stripes we are healed.
Rom.7:13] Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
[14] For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Our spirit is in bondage to our flesh. Only through repentance are we set free. But how can we know what is sin? Read his word, Jesus is the Living Word. The law and the prophets are written for our admonition. The gospels proved his grace.
Rom.7:15] For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
Spiritually arguing with yourself. The flesh wants one thing but the spirit wants the other.
Rom.7:16] If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
[17] Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
[18] For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Read very carefully, I can’t explain it any better. Remember it is the flesh arguing with the spirit. It is the law that convicts us spiritually.
Rom.7:19] For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
I can’t seem to do what is right. Is what this just said. I think we can all relate to that.
Rom.7:20] Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
The flesh seems to be winning.
Rom.7:21] I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
Even when I do good evil is within me? Yes, we are in the flesh.
Rom.7:22] For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
The spirit in me loves God.
Rom.7:23] But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
Mind is your spirit, the flesh fights against the spirit.
Rom.7:24] O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Who shall save me? Jesus Christ is our Savior.
Rom.7:25] I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
This verse satisfies the argument of whether we are under law or not. We serve the law of God spiritually, and the law of Judgement with the flesh. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
