Our titles for today’s study are; Verses 1-9 Freedom from sin’s power. Verses 10-13 The abundant life is a yielded life. Verses 14-22 Christians are under grace, the Spirit’s law. Verse 23 It is a fact that you are now dead in sin. Let’s learn about baptism today and a little more on law. Romans 6 and verse 1 reads.
Rom.6:1] What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Because of Gods’ gift of grace, do we continue sinning? Let’s back up to Romans 3 and verse 8 reads.
Rom.3:8] And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.
[9] What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Back to Romans 6 and verse 2 reads.
Rom.6:2] God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
It is through baptism that we live. What is Baptism? We read on.
Rom.6:3] Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
[4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
It is the declaration of baptism. That Jesus died and was in the tomb for three days, the going under the water. That he was resurrected, raised from the dead, the coming out of the water. It is through his death and resurrection that we live. We walk in the newness of life everlasting. Let’s go to Colossians 2 and verse 12 reads.
Col.2:12] Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
[13] And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
[14] Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
The blood ordinances were the only law that was done away with, they were nailed to the cross with Jesus.
Col.2:15] And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Let’s go to Hebrews 2 and verse 14 reads.
Heb.2:14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Rom.6:5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Like in death, like in resurrection.
Rom.6:6] Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
[7] For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Sin is of the flesh. These are what the blood ordinances were for. The sacrifices and the circumcisions. These are why Christ died on the cross for us. The law is still in effect, it is the law that convicts us of sin. It is repentance that releases us from sin. Let’s go to Colossians 2 and verse 11 reads.
Col.2:11] In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
See how the crucifixion of Jesus Christ became circumcision? This is why the blood ordinance is done away with. Christ became our Passover, his blood on the cross takes away sin on repentance, our Passover Lamb. Back to Romans 6 and verse 8 reads.
Rom.6:8] Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
[9] Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Let’s go to Hebrews 2:14 and read it one more time.
Heb.2:14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
That through his death in the flesh, which was promised throughout the scriptures would come to pass, Jesus can now destroy Satan. Remember it was the first prophecy. Let’s go to Genesis 3 and verse 14 reads.
Gen.3:14] And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
[15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
They bruised his heels on the cross and the woman’s seed shall bruise his head. This happens by his Elect (Chittum) during the sixth trump. Back to Romans and verse 10 reads.
Rom.6:10] For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Jesus tells us in John 10 and verse 17 reads.
John 10:17] Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
[18] No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
Back to Romans 6 and verse 11 reads.
Rom.6:11] Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This is why we repent, if not your sins remain.
Rom.6:12] Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Mortal speaks of your soul, and means; Liable to die. Let’s go to Psalms 19 and verse 12 reads.
Psa.19:12] Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
[13] Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Back to Romans 6 and verse 13 reads.
Rom.6:13] Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Immortality is deathlessness, and it also pertains to your soul. For God is Spirit. We serve God. Let’s go to James 4 and verse 1 reads.
James 4:1] From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
Members is G3196 melos pronounced mel’-os and means; A limb or part of the body. This should make you think of the many membered parts of the body of the church. Back to Romans 6 and verse 14 reads.
Rom.6:14] For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Under grace because Christ died on the cross that we might repent of our sins. But always remember sin is transgression of the law. After repentance, we know right from wrong, do not commit the same sin over and over again. Repentance G3341 metanoia pronounced met-an’-oy-ah and means; (subjectively) compunction (for guilt including reformation); by implication reversal of another´s decision. 1. a change of mind, as it appears to one who repents, of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done. Back to Romans 6 and verse 15 reads.
Rom.6:15] What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Christ was the final sacrifice for sin that on repentance we have grace. This is Law; The Commandments, The Judgements and The Ordinances. These are the blood ordinances that were nailed to the cross. But for the Gentiles sake, we have a new Law of Faith. With Faith one would not sin, and if he did, he would repent. This is how it is said we are not under law, but under Grace. Grace is unmerited favor (meaning we did not earn it) but given to us by Christ for repentance. Let’s go to 1Corinthians 9 and verse 20 reads.
1Cor.9:20] And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
[21] To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
[22] To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
Let’s take the time to understand this, let’s go to 1John 3 and verse 4 reads.
1John 3:4] Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
[5] And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
[6] Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
[7] Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
[8] He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
[9] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
[10] In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
This is why when we sin, and we will, through guilt for the love of the Father do we repent. We are under law or there would be no sin. Back to Romans 6 and verse 16 reads.
Rom.6:16] Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Let’s go to Matthew 6 and verse 24 reads.
Mat.6:24] No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Mammon is filthy lucre or riches. The love of money. G3126 and means; 3. riches (where it is personified and opposed to God). Back to Romans 6 and verse 17 reads.
Rom.6:17] But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
The doctrine of Jesus Christ. That these disciples wrote for us. This is why circumcision is of the heart now. Let’s go to 2Timothy 1 and verse 13 reads.
2Tim.1:13] Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
[14] That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
The Father and the Son dwell within us by the Holy Spirit. When we sin, the Father departs from us, for no sin can stand before him. This is that guilt that brings us to repentance. Back to Romans 6 and verse 18 reads.
Rom.6:18] Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
After repentance, God can now use us. Let’s go to 1Peter 2 and verse 16 reads.
1Pet.2:16] As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
Back to Romans 6 and verse 19 reads.
Rom.6:19] I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Repentance opens up a destiny, that the Lord may use us, and that we may serve him as his Elect.
Rom.6:20] For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
Let’s hear what Jesus said on this matter. John 8 and verse 34 reads.
John 8:34] Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
[35] And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
[36] If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
That was simple, back to Romans 6 and verse 21 reads.
Rom.6:21] What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
Don’t overlook ashamed, this is our guilt. Let’s go to Galatians 6 and verse 8 reads.
Gal.6:8] For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Back to Romans 6 and verse 22 reads.
Rom.6:22] But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Let’s go back to John 8 and verse 32 reads.
John 8:32] And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Truth is the Word of God, it surely does make us free from sin on repentance. Back to Romans 6 and verse 23 reads.
Rom.6:23] For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Grace is unmerited favor, we did not earn it, but he paid a heavy cost on the cross for us. Sin is death, but Christ is everlasting life. Let’s go to his throne.
