In today’s study our titles are; Verses 1-9 To judge others is to condemn self. Verses 10-16 God is no respecter of persons. Verses 17-29 The Jew and the law. Romans 2 is going to explain to us that God only is Judge. With judgement comes sentence, we are talking about a conclusion for being found guilty of sin. Romans 2 and verse 1 reads.
Rom.2:1] Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
Talking about those who judge others are themselves guilty of sin. As we judge others, so will we be judged. Jesus taught this specifically in Matthew 7 and verse 1 reads.
Mat.7:1] Judge not, that ye be not judged.
[2] For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
How you judge another will be how you are judged by the Father.
Mat.7:3] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
If your brother has a sin, and you have many, then aren’t you the more guilty?
Mat.7:4] Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
[5] Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
We do this with repentance, cleansing ourselves before we Help our brothers see their sins. Afterwards, showing their sins to them, then they might repent for their own sins. Jesus just called those that make themselves judges of others, hypocrites, play actors, holier than thou. Let’s go to Isaiah 65 and verse 5 reads.
Isa.65:5] Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.
These are a smoke in the LORD’s nose, very irritating to the Father. Now let’s go to Matthew 6 and verse 14 reads.
Mat.6:14] For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
[15] But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Back to Romans 2 and verse 2 reads.
Rom.2:2] But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
Speaking of those committing the sin of judgement. God only can judge righteously.
Rom.2:3] And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
Don’t count on it. We see here we are talking about judging sins when we are full of sins also. How do we keep from doing this? Simple, repent frequently of all sins and teach others to do so also.
Rom.2:4] Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
Longsuffering is patience. The Lord gave us grace, are we not to give it to our brothers also? Let’s go to 2Peter 3 and verse 9 reads.
2Pet.3:9] The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Repentance is for all. When we bring the gospel to others, we also should be patient for God was patient with us. Back to Romans and verse 5 reads.
Rom.2:5] But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
Let’s go to the Song of Moses since in Rev.15:3 we learn that the overcomers sing this song, Deuteronomy 32 and verse 34 reads.
Deu.32:34] Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?
[35] To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.
[36] For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.
After repentance the LORD forgives all sins. Back to Romans 2 and verse 6 reads.
Rom.2:6] Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
This word Deeds is G2041 ergon pronounced er’-gon, and means; Our Works. As servants of the LORD, these are the only thing we can take with us to heaven. Let’s go to 2Corinthians 5 and verse 10 reads.
2Cor.5:10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
Let’s go to Revelation 14 and verse 13 reads.
Rev.14:13] And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Our works are the only thing we take with us to heaven, whether good or bad, they do follow us. Back to Romans 2 and verse 7 reads.
Rom.2:7] To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
We seek the Lord and his kingdom. We seek life everlasting and as his servants, we do his will, and his will is patience.
Rom.2:8] But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
[9] Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
Both are subject to the Tribulation of the antichrist first, then the true Christ second. This kind of puts a hole in the rapture theory, doesn’t it. Now, let’s not lose perspective, we were talking about Judging others. Judgment is a very serious thing, when done by anyone other than God, because only God can deliver the punishment. God says the punishment for sin is death. Now, about discernment. Discernment is given to all that have studied the Word of God with understanding. Let’s go to Hebrews 5 and verse 12 reads.
Heb.5:12] For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
Notice we should study to become teachers to others.
Heb.5:13] For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
[14] But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Let’s go to 2Timothy 2 and verse 15 reads.
2Tim.2:15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
We learned in these first nine verses that only God can judge another of their sins because only he can carry out the sentencing. Do not let others tell you not to judge when you are simply discerning right from wrong, good from evil. Back to Romans 2 where we will learn God is no respecter of persons, and verse 10 reads.
Rom.2:10] But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
For good works, both will receive his reward in heaven.
Rom.2:11] For there is no respect of persons with God.
That’s right, God has no favorites. He loves all of his children equally. Remember when Jesus taught the parable of working in his vineyard. The first that started early, his Elect, were jealous of those who started late. Those that come to God on their deathbeds. All will receive forgiveness for repentance. And we are to pull as many out of the fire as we can. This is our job, this is how we are to be a servant of God.
Rom.2:12] For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
[13] (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
It is not enough to know the law, but we must be doers of the law. Let’s go to Matthew 5 and verse 17 reads.
Mat.5:17] Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Now a warning for the pastors that teach we are not under the law, Jesus continues.
Mat.5:19] Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
We see the law is still in effect, also called the Word of God. Let’s go to James 1 and verse 21 reads.
James 1:21] Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
Look at this word Superfluity, G4050 perisseia pronounced per-is-si’-ah and means; surplusage that is superabundance. Residue, remains: the wickedness remaining over in a Christian from his state prior to conversion. Used by the Greeks to describe the excess wax in their ears. Ears to hear.
James 1:22] But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
[23] For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
[24] For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
[25] But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Remember Deeds are Works. This word liberty is interesting. G1657 means; of free will. Back to Romans 2 and verse 14 reads.
Rom.2:14] For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
[15] Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
The Gentiles are brought into the house of Jacob by their hearts, remember circumcision is of the heart now, both men and women. Though they don’t know God’s law, nature shows them right from wrong. Any Gentile that accepts Jesus Christ as the Son of God has accepted God as well, and has done so in Faith without seeing.
Rom.2:16] In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
First note the; In the day. What day? On the first day of the millennium, when Jesus comes at the second advent. Let’s go to John 5 and verse 22 reads.
John 5:22] For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
Now let’s go to 2Corinthians 4 and verse 3 reads.
2Cor.4:3] But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
[4] In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Notice the first god is lowercase, for Satan. Back to Romans 2 and verse 17 reads.
Rom.2:17] Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
We have the law.
Rom.2:18] And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
But we of Israel, the twelve tribes of Jacob, have been given the law, are expected to be a doer of his law, his Word, and will be judged out of the law. Remember the blood ordinance was the only thing nailed with Jesus on the cross. Now we have repentance. Let’s go to Deuteronomy 4 and verse 7 reads.
Deu.4:7] For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
[8] And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
First note that America received our laws through scriptures, especially Deuteronomy. Now let’s go to Philippians 1 and verse 9 reads.
Phi.1:9] And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;
[10] That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;
Until the second advent. Back to Romans 2 and verse 19 reads.
Rom.2:19] And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
Let’s go to Genesis 1 and verse 3 reads.
Gen.1:3] And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
[4] And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
[5] And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Now let’s go to John 1 and verse 4 reads.
John 1:4] In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
[5] And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Christ is that Light. And we are Christians, Christ men. We are to be that light among the darkness of this world. We are to teach the Word of Jesus Christ. Jesus also taught this in Matthew 15 and verse 13 reads.
Mat.15:13] But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
Speaking of the parable of the Tares.
Mat.15:14] Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
If the Kenites lead them, then they all shall go into the fire. Back to Romans 2 and verse 20 reads.
Rom.2:20] An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
It just said that we are to teach. Study his word enough to teach others and bring them to Christ. But don’t overlook it said truth in the law, the law was not done away with, in fact it is the judgement of Israel. Don’t be a false teacher, milk is for babes. Give them meat, give them the law, the prophets and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Doing so is being a doer of his Word, and this pleases our LORD.
Rom.2:21] Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
[22] Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
Don’t be a hypocrite, a false teacher. Sacrilege is stealing from God. Now, what did this just say? Teaching others is easily understood if you are a teacher. For we know that it takes much study to put a study together. But this carries over with what is said after that. One does not steal if he teaches not to steal, or with adultery, or with idols. These are false teachers, let’s go to Psalms 50 and verse 16 reads.
Psa.50:16] But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
[17] Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
[18] When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.
[19] Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.
[20] Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother’s son.
Back to Romans 2 and verse 23 reads.
Rom.2:23] Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
[24] For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
Let’s go to 2Samuel 12, David had sinned greatly, and verse 13 reads.
2Sam.12:13] And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
[14] Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
And his first child by the wife of Uriah the Hittite did die, but his sons Solomon and Nathan would be born of her. Now, remember it was written, let’s go to Isaiah 52 and verse 5 reads.
Isa.52:5] Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.
Back to Romans 2 and verse 25 reads.
Rom.2:25] For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
Circumcision is of the heart, and is for both male and female. This is the only thing that was done away with after Christ was crucified. All blood ordinances were nailed to the cross. It said; your circumcision (which is of the heart) has been done away with if you break the law. Another place where the false teachers need to pay attention. We are still under law.
Rom.2:26] Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
If the Gentile keeps the righteousness of the law, should not he then be called a child of the Living God? The answer of course is yes.
Rom.2:27] And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?
Uncircumcision is by nature, meaning the Gentiles will hold the Israelites accountable for their sins for they follow the law. Keep in mind circumcision is said for Israelites and uncircumcision is said for the Gentiles.
Rom.2:28] For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
[29] But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Circumcision is of the heart now, it is spiritual. Not of the law anymore because Jesus was our Sacrifice for once and all time. I want to go to Hosea 6 and verse 6 reads.
Hos.6:6] For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
Mercy is love, to know his Word more than burnt offerings. God said I want your love, and not your sacrifices. Circumcision is of the heart. Christ died for our sins that on repentance all sins can be forgiven. Let’s go to his throne.
