Today’s titles are; Verses 1-16 Jesus sends forth the seventy. Verses 17-24 The return of the seventy. Verses 25-37 The parable of the good Samaritan. Verses 38-42 Martha and Mary. Luke 10 and verse 1 reads.
Luke 10:1] After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
In Mark 6:7 he sent the twelve out two by two also. Always having a second witness. These seventy will be going ahead of Jesus into the cities, where our Lord will be going, to see if they will receive him or not.
Luke 10:2] Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
This is a great example for us today who are sent to teach the truth to the children of God. Let’s go to John 4 and verse 35 reads.
John 4:35] Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
[36] And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
There is much wicked in the world today, we are to be bold in the Word of God without fear. Let’s go to 2Thessalonians 3 and verse 1 reads.
2Thes.3:1] Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:
[2] And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
[3] But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
[4] And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.
The LORD is with us, fear not, but teach the Word of God for he is with you. Back to Luke 10 and verse 3 reads.
Luke 10:3] Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
In Matthew 10:16 there is no period but a colon. After wolves he continues with; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Be wiser than the Kenites who are the evil in this world even until today. Harmless as doves, but even doves protect their young viciously.
Luke 10:4] Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
Take no money or carry a begging bag, God does not send out beggars. Salute no man by the way, meaning do not greet just any man, especially those who are not in Jesus. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
Luke 10:5] And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
Salute the house, Peace be to this house. Let’s go to Psalms 122 and verse 7 reads.
Psa.122:7] Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.
[8] For my brethren and companions’ sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.
Now we can understand Peace be to this house is the same as Salute the house. Back to Luke 10 and verse 6 reads.
Luke 10:6] And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
[7] And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
This is a simple truth. In those days they would throw a party for those that came into their house. This is just saying go not house to house, you will never have the time to preach. Eating and drinking such things as they give is misunderstood. It is talking about being in a house that understands the food laws, if they don’t then they are not worthy of you being in their homes.
Luke 10:8] And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
[9] And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Heal the sick and preach the kingdom of God. This is the job of a disciple.
Luke 10:10] But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
[11] Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
[12] But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
If they don’t accept the Word of God, then shake off the dust of that city in front of them as a witness against them. They may see and repent because God has already destroyed Sodom and Gomorra.
Luke 10:13] Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
[14] But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
Chorazin is G5523 pronounced khor-ad-zin’. And means; a furnace of smoke. A town in Galilee. Bethsaida is G966 pronounced bayth-sahee-dah’. And means; house of fish. Both of these towns are in Palestine on the east side of the Jordan on the shore of Lake Gennesaret. All this to show you that these are suppose to be Israelites, and if they do not accept Jesus Christ, it will be more tolerable for the gentiles than for them.
Luke 10:15] And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
Capernaum means; city of compassion. If they don’t come to Jesus, they will be in danger of hell. Let’s go to Isaiah where God is speaking to Satan about him exalting himself, Isaiah 14 and verse 12 reads.
Isa.14:12] How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
[13] For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
[14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
[15] Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
This happens at the sixth trump, it will happen. Back to Luke 10 and verse 16 reads.
Luke 10:16] He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
These were the instructions for those who he sent out to heal and preach that the kingdom of the LORD has come. Are you a disciple of Jesus, then this is written for your sakes. Now, listen very carefully, what he has given to these seventy, he has given to you as well.
Luke 10:17] And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
Do not overlook, in thy name. In the name of Jesus only can you heal or cast out devils. The devils and even Satan are subject under you. If you know this, they will hide themselves from you. They will attack you by other means or tempt your flesh in other ways, beware of this. Remember what happened to the exorcists in Acts 19 and verse 13 reads.
Acts 19:13] Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
They didn’t know Jesus, but only what Paul preached.
Acts 19:14] And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
This man Sceva was a chief of the priests, let’s see how this goes for him and his seven sons.
Acts 19:15] And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
[16] And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Always cast out devils in the name of Jesus Christ, this gives credentials that you are a Christian. Keep this in mind as we continue. Back to Luke 10 and verse 18 reads.
Luke 10:18] And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Jesus is letting us who are in the fifth trump know what to watch for. Let’s go to Revelation 12 and verse 6 reads.
Rev.12:6] And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
These are the three and half years, that Jesus shortened in Mark 13 and verse 20 reads.
Mark 13:20] And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
This is very important for God’s Elect, you can find he shortened it to five months in Rev.9:5, back to Revelation 12 and verse 7 reads.
Rev.12:7] And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Do not overlook Satan and his angels.
Rev.12:8] And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
[9] And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Satan, called that old Serpent from the Garden, with his angels are cast out of heaven at the sixth trump. Teach your students to count, Satan comes at the sixth trump and Jesus returns at the seventh trump. There will be no flying away or rapture. Back to Luke 10 and verse 19 reads.
Luke 10:19] Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
[20] Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Jesus has given us power over serpents and scorpions and all of our enemies, including Satan. Remember to use; in the name of Jesus Christ, to cast them out and send them back to the Father. This comes with great responsibilities. For if you cleanse a person of an evil spirit, you had better fill that person with Jesus, the Word. Let’s go to Luke 11 and verse 24 reads.
Luke 11:24] When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
[25] And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
[26] Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
So important to understand the Word of God that Jesus prays for us now, Luke 10 and verse 21 reads.
Luke 10:21] In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
[22] All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
Reveal Truth, that is The Word. Let’s go to Revelation 19 and verse 13 reads.
Rev.19:13] And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
Jesus is thanking the Father for opening our eyes and ears to the Word of God, that is Jesus Christ. Back to Luke 10 and verse 23 reads.
Luke 10:23] And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
Jesus says this for your admonition also. 1Corinthians 10 and verse 11 reads.
1Cor.10:11] Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
And in Matthew 13 and verse 16 reads.
Mat.13:16] But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
We are speaking of our spiritual eyes and ears. Back to Luke 10 and verse 24 reads.
Luke 10:24] For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
Another important verse. We see here that prophets and kings (king David for one) desired to see those things which the twelve have seen. After all they had prophesied about them coming to pass. What is prophecy? For God’s Elect in these end times, it is to know what is written will come to pass exactly as it was written. For a prophecy must have a three-fold fulfillment, as with Christ who was, and is, and is to come. We have it prophesied, and then two advents. The first fulfilled when Jesus came as Savior, the second is to come at the seventh trump. That is when Jesus comes not as a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, but with that rod of iron for discipline. I have done a Topical Teaching on this titled The Spirit of Prophecy, Appendix 103 from the Companion Bible. Above in verse 24 Jesus tells us that the prophets who prophesied these things did not get to see them come to pass as the disciples did witness. Peter taught this in 1Peter 1 and verse 10 reads.
1Pet.1:10] Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
[11] Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
It was not only prophesied that Jesus the Messiah would come, but that he would be crucified also. Back to Luke 10 and verse 25 reads.
Luke 10:25] And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
This scripture lawyer should have studied Deuteronomy 6 and verse 16 reads.
Deu.6:16] Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.
Back to Luke 10 and verse 26 reads.
Luke 10:26] He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
[27] And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
He did study a little of Deuteronomy 6 and quotes verse 5 and it reads.
Deu.6:5] And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
We notice here that “And thy neighbor as thyself” is not in Deuteronomy. We do find it in Leviticus 19 and verse 18 reads.
Lev.19:18] Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
Now it is important to understand the difference between a brother and a neighbor. A brother is one born of Israel, where as a neighbor is a gentile that commits himself to being a fellow Christian. Do not let anyone tell you different. Back to Luke 10 and verse 28 reads.
Luke 10:28] And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
[29] But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
Jesus will explain just what a neighbor is. Do not overlook this scripture lawyer is trying to justify himself, and is tempting the Lord again.
Luke 10:30] And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
[31] And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
A priest passes this wounded man, think of our churches today.
Luke 10:32] And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
Now a Levite, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Not all Levites are priests, but all priests are Levites.
Luke 10:33] But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
Compassion is a trademark of God’s Elect.
Luke 10:34] And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
[35] And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
This Samaritan is given as an example of a Gentile. But, because he showed compassion, makes him the like for a fellow Christian.
Luke 10:36] Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
[37] And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
This is how Salvation is not only for Israel, but for the Gentiles also. The brothers of Israel did not stop and help one of their own, but him that had compassion. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, the golden rule. Let’s go to Proverbs 14 and verse 21 reads.
Prov.14:21] He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
[22] Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.
Back to Luke 10 and verse 38 reads.
Luke 10:38] Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
[39] And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
Both Martha and Mary are sisters to Lazareth. But Mary is captivated by Jesus’s teachings, wouldn’t you like to have been there also.
Luke 10:40] But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
[41] And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
Martha troubled herself to serve the Lord.
Luke 10:42] But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Let’s go to Psalms 27 and verse 4 reads.
Psa.27:4] One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
Mary chose to hear the Word of God. Jesus, being the Word, opened her ears. Great study today, let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
