After the salutations, in this chapter we are growing in faith by being founded in truth and will finish with the Bible being a book of oneness. 2Peter 1 and verse 1 reads.
2Pet.1:1] Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
Written to the elect, the chosen, those called.
2Pet.1:2] Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
[3] According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Through virtue we are called, by the knowledge he has given to us the Holy Spirit through his grace.
2Pet.1:4] Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
The world being corrupt he has given us promises. Let’s go to Isaiah 43 and read verse 26.
Isa.43:26] Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.
What was just said means, “Remind me of my promises”. The Lord hasn’t forgotten, he wants to know if you have read them. Remember Jesus said “I have foretold you all things”. Back to 2Pet.1 and verse 5 reads.
2Pet.1:5] And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
What is this virtue? It is moral goodness or modesty. Adding this to your faith, God will add knowledge. Want more knowledge of God’s word, then in all things be morally righteous in the sight of God and he will bless you with more wisdom from his word.
2Pet.1:6] And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
[7] And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
[8] For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Notice that you can’t have one without first having the other. I know this sounds repetitious, but this is how we please God, reading with understanding and doing his word. Be a doer of his word, and he will bless you more and more every day, because you show your love for him by staying in his word.
2Pet.1:9] But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
These things were added to faith. So, we see that faith is not enough, though you repent and do NOT read his word for the understanding, he blinds you for not being a doer of his word. It’s not enough to say you love him, you must show that you love him. Anyone in a relationship should understand this.
2Pet.1:10] Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
As elect we should know these things. Let’s go to Ephesians 1 and verse 4 reads.
Eph.1:4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
From the first earth age, before the Katabole he chose us for this time.
Eph.1:5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Predestined us as his children while in the flesh at this time for us to do his will. Back to 2Pet.1 and verse 11 reads.
2Pet.1:11] For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
This entrance (Veil) was torn from top to bottom by our Lord Jesus Christ.
2Pet.1:12] Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
We know and have always known the truth, but he will remind us. He does this by opening our eyes to his word. Let’s go to Jude and read verse 5.
Jude 5] I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
Before we were born from above, we were with him and saw how those that didn’t believe died in the wilderness. Back to 2Pet.1 and verse 13 reads.
2Pet.1:13] Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
[14] Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
This tabernacle is our fleshly bodies. When we die the flesh goes back to dust and our spirits back to the Father who gave it. Ecc.12:7. This is the first resurrection. All who die will go back to the LORD in our spiritual bodies. Peter is also acknowledging how Jesus showed him how he would die. John 21:18-19.
2Pet.1:15] Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
Peter just said to think on this after his death, his words live on in God’s word.
2Pet.1:16] For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
Peter, along with the eleven, witnessed the miracles and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Let’s go to 1Cor.1:17-18 and it reads.
1Cor.1:17] For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
[18] For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
We must teach Christ crucified, who, when, where and why, for this is the power of God. Back to 2Pet.1 and verse 17 reads.
2Pet.1:17] For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
[18] And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
On the mount of transfiguration, Mat.17:5. Let’s read.
Mat.17:5] While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Not just “this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” He then says “Hear him.” Beloved, do you have ears to hear, have you read his word? There will always be more said when you go back and read again what was written. Back to 2Pet.1 and verse 19 reads.
2Pet.1:19] We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
Speaking of course of Jesus being that Light, written in the third verse of the bible. Let’s go to Gen.1:3-5 and it reads.
Gen.1:3] And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
[4] And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
[5] And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Also written in John 1:1-5 and verse 1 reads.
John 1:1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[2] The same was in the beginning with God.
[3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
[4] In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
[5] And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Now, Peter was saying that we need that Light of Christ to shine through us, staying in the word let’s Christ shine through us to the world. Back to 2Pet.1 and verse 20 reads.
2Pet.1:20] Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
It’s not how you interpret God’s word, it’s what is written. People who think they can interpret God’s word for God are dangerously flirting with the death of their souls. We search the scriptures, we seek in the languages that it was written in, we pray, we fast. We let the Holy Spirit lead us in his word.
2Pet.1:21] For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
“In old time” should have been translated “at any time”. Meaning not by any man’s will, but by the Holy Spirit alone. All scripture is given by God. Let’s read 2Tim.3:16-17.
2Tim.3:16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
[17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
An awesome start to a great book, looking forward to the next chapter. Please join me again and have a blessed day. Let’s go to his throne.
Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
