1 Corinthians 8 and verse 1 reads.

1Cor.8:1] Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

Things offered to idols are a sin to those that do not understand the law. This lesson will be complicated to those who haven’t studied the law and the gospels. Simply put, meat that was offered to an idol is still just that, meat. Puffed up is Pride, charity is Love.

1Cor.8:2] And if any man think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
[3] But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

We learned this in the gospels.

1Cor.8:4] As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

For this is the reason we know that anything offered to an idol is offered to nothing.

1Cor.8:5] For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
[6] But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

The trinity was just mentioned here, the Father, the Son, and where ever you have the two you have the Holy Spirit. But, hear what he just said, though they might believe in other gods, we know there is but One.

1Cor.8:7] Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
[8] But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

The weak is talking about a new Christian. Who might have just come to the Lord, but has not learned the laws or prophets as of yet.

1Cor.8:9] But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
[10] For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

The weak will see it as you eating meat offered to an idol as if it were real. This is the stumbling block that you just put before him. My question is why are you or that weak one in a house of a false idol? Being there brings into question your and his intelligence.

1Cor.8:11] And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
[12] But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
[13] Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

In other words, don’t eat what you know is alright to eat but rather get yourself and your brother out of there. And maybe take some time to explain this simple message to him. If anyone offers any meat to an idol it means nothing. There is but one God and he reads the hearts of men. Give thanks in your heart (mind) to him, then enjoy a nice steak dinner. The whole lesson here is not to be a stumbling block to a new Christian. And in my opinion, all this could have been handled better if neither of you were there to begin with. Let’s go to his throne.

Father, we thank you for your word and ask that you bless all that love you in Jesus’s precious name, Amen.
